BOWLING.

JXMMON T(X&NAMENT. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. SOUTH ISLAND PLAYERS ELIMINATED. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, January 8. The Dominion of New Zealand bowling tourney was continued to-day in perfect weather.. At the end of the ninth round the only ones remaining in were:—North, Parsons, Smart, Coltman, Delaunay, Pollock. . North (Te Awamutu) was the only player left with two lives. At the termination of the eighth round only nine players were left in, and of these only two were two lifers —North (Te Awamutu) _ and Delaunay (Epsom). Of these nine six were from the Auckland district, one from Wellington( Pollock), one from Hawke’s Bay (Hummer), and one from,Taranaki (Smart). No players - from the South Island remained in the contest. The seventh round saw the elimination of the ’last of the ■ Australians.. These were Allott and Beulke, of Melbourne J.. Blair, "Of .Melbourne received his quietus, in the sixth round. The weather conditions were perfect, and the greens played true and keen. Pollock (Newton) came into the limelight by defeating Walker (Auckland) in the seventh round, and again in the eighth, when, after a hard fight he defeated Pilkiugton by a' single point. . (To Awamutu), who had not yet h*d a lose up to the eighth round, made no mistake in his game with Auclell, and on the eighteenth head the game ended with the score 22—10 in North’s favour. ■

A* Smart (New Plymouth) was too good for Edwards (Temuka), The Egnionter drew steadily on either hand with little demand for firm shots. The game ended oh the i nineteenth head—l 9-9. i . One of the most interesting games of the eighth round was that between Watson (Tirau) and Parsons (Ponsonby). Y he /.°i™er for the first 10 heads drew beautifully, and looked all over a winner with the_ score 10—2 in his favour, but ■parsons- drew patiently and well, and on three or four occasions Watson elected to ■ drive, with the result that he lost- his drawing touch,, and Parsons, ■ drawing accurately with .almost mechanical persistency, pied up 21 points in seven heads, tuien Watson resigned. Lively interest was taken in the Smart (New Plymouth)-Audell (Hataitrf.) game in the seventh round. Both played good bowls, but Audell was drawing with the greater accuracy, and the last head saw f T behM He could only get two shots, Audell having a good third shot in a handy position. ij' (Wellington) met Scott ,(Caledonian), last year’s singles champion, in the seventh round, and succeeded in_trouncmg him to the tune of 10 points. in the next round Hill met Coltman (Carlton), and after a splendid game was defeated by a single point. ■ Qne of the most salutary defeats of the day was that of Bremner by Smart. Only 17 heads were played, and of those Bremner scored .pn three. Smart piled on 27 points. Tlie. game between the two unbeaten . men,-North and Delaunay, in the ninth round, was a perfect exhibition of singlehanded play. Each man played a beautiful drawing game, there being little to choose between them. . Another fair exhibition was given by Coltwan (Carlton) and Ktimmer . (St, Leonards), the former winning a dingdong game by three points only. -Parsons, played '■ another’ fine game against Clarke, NOTES ON THE PLAY. SOME NOTABLE GAMES. (Special to Dailt Times.) . WELLINGTON. January 8. The conditions were perfect for the second day of., the bowling tournament. .There was practically no wind, and the greens were in great order. Play was 7 confined to the singles. Five greens were iu use at the start of the day, but subsequently the players were brought to the Wellington green. It. was a disastrous day for the South Islanders, who were eliminated one. by one, as were the Australians. In the first round this morning the winners included Edwards (Temuka), Reese (United), Watson (United), Efford (Edgeware), Lindsay and Scott (Caledonian) , HutchisOn and Gardiner (Dunedin), and Littlejohn : and Grant (Phoenix), while Wilkinson and Bentley, of Dunedin, and Wyatt, of Caledonian, went out. Higginson (Dunedin) also suffered a-severe defeat, but as he was a two-lifer ; he_ went on, winning his next game, but going down to Pilkington in his third game to-day. . The sixth round saw the end of Lindsay, who was easily beaten by Parsons, of Ponsonby, while Scott, Gardiner, Reese, EfforJ, Grant,- and Littlejohn were other southerners who suffered defeat. Watson, of United, survived this round; but was eventually beaten by Parsons by 27 to 12. This was an extraordinary game. Watson ■ led by 10 to 2 at one stage, and was drawing perfectly. Then he took on three or four drives to counteract brilliant drawing by his opponent, and as a result Watson lost his. length, and Parsons piled on the points in great style. Edwards suffered his'first defeat from Delaunay, and in the next round Smart, of New Plymouth, paralysed the Temuka champion. .Maxwell Walker had a short run to-day. He lost his first game to Heazlewood (Lyall Bay), and after beating Porteous, of Thorndon, he succumbed by a narrow margin to Pollock, of Newtown, who had in the first round of the day been slaughtered by Delaunay to the tune of 27 to 7. A sensational defeat was that inflicted by Allan Smart over W. Bretrtner in the last round to-day. Bremnei scored only seven, while Smart piled on 27 points. The game between North and Delaunay in the last round of the day provided a wonderful exhibition of singles play. Another great game was that in which Parsons beat Clarke. The performance of Parsons was exceptional. He lost his first game yesterday very unexpectedly, but since then he has gone on with an uninterrupted succession of wins.
