(Special to Daily Times, j WELLINGTON, January 7. The weather smiled on the bowlers today, when the annual tournament was commenced. Following on a> lot of rain during the preceding fortnight the weather cleared on Sunday, and the sun shone brightly to-day. As a result the greens were all fairly fast—much too fast ‘ for some of the visitors from districts where heavy greens have ruled so far this season. A high wind was in evidence at times, and play was difficult on some of the greens. With the assistance of fine weather the greens will be exceptionally fast later on. Play to-day was confined to the singles with an entry of 204. Four rounds were played, and at the end of the day 18 players survived with two lives, while there, were 62 with one life. The only South Islanders in the unbeaten lot are T. Edwards, of Temuka, and Higginsou, of Dunedin, both of whom played good bowls all day. To-morrow morning ■ Edwards will meet A. R. Porteous, of Thorndon, while Higginsou will play Naylor, also of Thorndon. The South Island is fairly well represented among the one-lifers, with Lindsay (Caledonian), J. Scott (Caledonian), Hutchison, and J. G. Bentley (Dunedin), W. Wyatt (Caledonian), Grant and Littlejohn (both of Phoenix, Oaniaru), Watson and Reese (United), and Efford (Edgware). Some of the other southern players hung on well. ■ The Dunedin player, J. Best, after winning his first two games went down in the next two' to Daniels (Remuera)) and Field (Hataitai). Harraway opened with a very easy win, just scraped home in .the second game, and then lost the next two. Ten Australians are included in the list of those who survive with one life. To-morrow’s games in the singles will make a big weeding out, and there should be some keen games if only the weather remains fine, on which point the local weather experts seem a little doubtful. Play will be concentrated on five greens and it will be possible to follow the results more closely than was the case today.
