COST OF ENFORCEMENT. JOKE WORKED' ON SENATOR. (United Press Association. > (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.* WASHINGTON, December 13. (Received Dec. 14, at 10 p.m.) Something in the nature ol a joke was played to-day on Senator Bruce, who is described as “ wet ” Bruce. On the basis of a. statement made by Mr Doran, the prohibition commissioner, he asked for an appropriation of 270,000,000 dollars, which tli c Senate promptly passed in order to prevent delay in the debate, which Senator Bruce was ready to precipitate in order to discuss the fallacies of prohibition. H e was thus cheated of an opportunity to talk, but it is certain that the 270,000.000 dollars will be rejected when the measure come up in the conference with the’ House of Representatives.—Australian Press Association.
Mr Doran, the prohibition commissioner, recently informed the House Appropriations, Committee that effective policing of the United States and the enforcement of '.prohibition would cost 300,'D0,000 dollars a year. . Appropriations for this purpose new fiscal ycar W «H bo only 40,000,000 dollars. Mr Doran expressed he opinion that under the circumstances the government was doing a “ pretty good job. It was a matter of policy whether Congress wanted to embark in ‘the police mm foon","?! if f h ' vollld 0UU.000.000 dollars and a system of United Mates courts covering the land.
