BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS ♦ , (Fkom Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, December 1-1. i . TOWN IMPROVEMENT. _A start has been made with the erection of two shops in brick in Clyde Btreet for Mr Callum Stevenson, news agent. The building has been designed by Mr D. G. Mowat, of Dunedin, and the contractors are Messrs Williams and Wiles, of the same' city. The shops have been designed on thoroughly modern lines, and should add greatly to the appearance of t the main street of the borough. The' : street elevation is to be finished in medusa white cement plaster, and the Roods displayed behind the liberal expanse of plateglasß will be protected by a modern hanging veranda. Carefully elected tiles will give the front a finished appearance. The Rlass in the main door will extend right down to the floor. The walls are to be of brick, finished in white cement. The first sports .meeting, under the auspices of the South Otago Primary, bchool Sports Association was held on tlv> Show Ground, Balclutha. to-day, in unweather.. .The annual break-up of ' the South Utago High School took place to-day, ■\\ hen there was a good attendance ot parents and friends at the school at ■Kosebank, Balclutha, Owing to the rain the proposed garden party iii the grounds could not be held, aiuj the, function was held indoors. Mr D. Marshall (chairman_ of the Board of Governora), who presided, in the course' of a speech appropriate to the occasion reviewed , the ot the year, whifch had been very eatisfactovy, and said he considered the school had already, achieved its purpose in the lives of the cihldren and in tho lUe of the community. He warmly commended the work of the principal (Mr John Reid) and staff, and said he considered the school had a great future before it. Tbe grounds were being gradu- - ally improved, the ■ lawn tennis courts being now ready, and he hoped that by the end of next year they would have a decent football ground connected with the school.

Other speakers were Mr D. T. Flemhig (representing the Otago Education Board), Mr J. D. Landele, the Rev. Hadley W hite, and Mr John Reid. An important feature of the occasion was the presentation of dux medals to Lorna E. Sutherland (1927) and Alan Thomas Begg (1928). An interesting musical programme was contributed to by Misses Flora Farquhar and Kathleen Rutherford (piano duct), Miss A. Allan (somrl. Master F.
