ARCHERFIELD.

In Burns Hall last night the annual break-up ceremony of the Artherfield Girls’ School was held, the Rev. Dr E. N. Merrington presiding. The chairman, after welcoming the parents and friends of the school, stated' that steady work had been done in the school throughout the year,* with outstanding success in several branches. Three girls ‘ had been among the first eight in the Victoria, League essay competition, open to secondary schools of Otago. 1 - Dorothy Clark had obtained her L.T.C.L. in elocution, and two others had entered for the F.T.C.L. examination, tne results of which were not yet known. _ln the rudiments of music examination of the Associated Board four girls had entered, and out of'a maximum of 99 marks they had obtained respectively 99, 98, 97, and 06 marks. Jocelyn Dunlop had been elected a working member of the Dunedin Art Society; Nancy Fleming,. Rua Frapwell, and Alison Bell had obtained the award of merit in lifesaving: and the school team had won the Dunedin secondary schools’ life-saving competition. Nancy Fleming bad won the bew Zealand Lawn Tennis Associations girls’ championship. The school had been- second equal in the portfolio competition organised by the Junior Red Cross and .open to all schools in New Zealand.

.The chairman offered his congratuations to the school'on-the success°of the Jeai s work and to Mrs Cleghorn, the headmistress, on her able management of the destinies ot the school. He would not be able to inake his usual weekly visit to the school, he said, as he had been called to a new position, but he hoped that he would still be able to pay the school an occasional visit. He thanked the pupils for their attention and the interest they had taken in his teaching. Professor T. D. Adams, who presented the prizes, congratulated Dr Merrington or. his appointment to what tiorae peonle at least regarded as one of the moV important academic posts in the whole ot the Dominion. He was pleased to be present- as the representative of th> Otago University. There were many, links which bound Archerfield and tlm University together. The school had contributed a very fine type of girl to the University, showing that It maintained u very, high standard of work. The speaker paid a tribute to the good work of Mrs basket, who at present in Australia, and suggested that a message of affection cud goodwill should he sent to her. He also congratulated* the members of tha staff on the way they had carried o.it their duties, and stated that what separated a first-rate school from a second or third-rate school was the fact that a first-rate school possessed teachers who put their whole sophs into their work and

gave their whole selves to the school. Tim reputation of the school could always ba enhanced by the pupils. He urged parent? to allow their children to remain at the school for one or two years after they had matriculated. He considered it a matter of great importance because the pupil could go on with her particular branch of study -so that in after, life it would become a very great joy and, in fact, a necessity.
