/Prom Our Own Correspondent.! BAICLUTHA, December 13. RESCUE OF A COW. At Kaitangata to-day, before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., George Finch, aged 17, a farm labourer, was charged with unlawfully removing a cow from the custody of the borough ranger, who had rightly impounded it. The accused had ridden .up on horseback and forcibly taken away the cow while it was being driven to the pound by the ranger. After hearing corroborative evidence the magistrate recorded a conviction, and ordered the accused to pay costs (16s), witnesses’ expenses (10s), and solicitor’s foe (£1 Is). HIGH SCHOOL BOARD. The monthly meeting of the South Otago High School Board last night was attended by Messrs D. Marshall (chairman), D. T. Fleming, Parker M'Kinlay, J, D. Landels, James Guest, William Roy, and Mrs D. Dallas. Correspondence was read from the Director of Education, Wellington, stating that the Public Works Department had been asked to call for tenders for heating the laboratory, teachers’, and principal’s rooms; also that the Public Works Department had been requested to allow an engineer to discuss the matter of lay out of the sports ground at the school with the board, and that improvements to the school grounds would not be affected by the additions that might he made to the school building. There was no information available as to the probability of further building accommodation to be provided for present pupils, or of Standards V and VI. being drafted from the primary to the High School.—lt was decided that the secretary write to the district engineer, Public Works Department, Dunedin, urging the need for the Jay out of the sports ground being proceeded with. 11 was also agreed on the motion of Messrs M'Kinlay and Fleming that the Works Committee confer with the public works engineer. 1 The principal (Mr John Reid) presented the annual report, in. which he commented strongly on . the present system in the public examinations. T jandels produced a plan from Mr Wilson, surveyor, of the proposed football ground, which would cost approximately £looo.—lt was decided to postpone consideration till after receipt of the public works report. 1 Accounts amounting to £6B 13s were passed for payment. The appointment of Miss Aitcheson, of Kaitangata, to the position of singing mistress was confirmed. HIGHER EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT. In the course of his annual report the principal of the South Otago High School (Mr John Reid) referred to the difficulty he had each year in finding employment for the boys who were leaving school. He had made many inquiries, and had even made a trip to Dunedin for the purpose of interviewing employers, but he considered that the economic conditions were making it in-

creasingly difficult for boys to find work in-the towns. Mr D. T. Fleming suggested that the board should co-operate with the principal, and endeavour to .find employment in the country for the boys. ......

GIRL. GUIDES’ BREAK-UP,

The annual break-up ceremony of the Second Company of Girl Guides was held in St. Mark’s Hall last evening before a large audience. The programme consisted of competitions, signalling displays, sea chanties, and folk songs. An inspiring address was given to the girls by Mr John Reid (principal of the South Otago High School). The singing of the Guide song, “.Taps,” brought a very enjoyable function to a close.
