KARITANE, December 13. Iho school year draws to a close, and teachers and children aro busy preparing for tho break-up concert. The district is fortunate in having a headmaster and mistress who (ake such a keen interest m the pupils. . Several new cottages are being erected ur readiness for tho coming holidays. Th o old-time crib is now a thing of the past, having given way to tho moi’o Of less modern comfortable cottage. The recently erected cottages have certainly brightened up the district considerably. Fishing ie still very dull, though it Is understood that at least one good haul has.been madp within tue last few days. ' Since our last notes .the residents are grateful to Messrs M’DonaJd and M‘Kenzie for their work in cleaning up the newly-formed esplanade. The wharf shed and wharf are still in ? discreditable state of repair, though it is understood that the Public Works’ Department has authority, to carry out some much-needed repairs. Tire forthcoming carnival and regatta a , re . G’o principal topics of interest, and elaborate arrangements are being made to make this year’s regatta and carnival an outstanding success. No fewer than three silver challenge cups have been presented to. tho Regatta Committee, and the committee is grateful to Mr J. M. Samson for the outboard motor challenge cup the Waitaki Dairy Company for the championship challenge cup fo r -rowing events, and Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson for a fine challenge cup for swimming events. Mr Lawson has promised a fat lamb, and it is understood that a fine high-speed pi» hag been promised for the greasy nig chase, Sir H. L. Paterson having under taken to treat the animal with suitable ml dressing. Much interest should he roused in the coming outboard motor events, as it is understood that there are several keen entrants in theso races. Steps are being taken to have the course surveyed for these events. It is possible that more than one speed boat will bo present, and it would be interesting if a speed boat event could be included in the regatta. Swimming enthusiasts will have some good sport on December 26 and 27, when aquaplane contests will be held, the towing boat being sailed by that well-known enthusiast, Mr Peter Drummond, Tho hardwood wall erected by the Amenities Society i s proving a success. It is understood that the society is taking steps to have seats erected on the esplanade for the pleasure and convenience of ladies and children in particular. . Mr Taine has had a high-powcr searchlight installed at his residence, and has kindly promised to co-operate with the Regatta Committee by giving searchlight displays on regatta night. °
