THE WYNDHAM SHOW.

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL DISPLAY. OPENING OF NEW SHOW- . GROUNDS. ■ r , / (From Ou« Special Reporter.) WYNDHAM, '7. ■ The Wyndham -Summer Show is one of the most popular of the smaller .Southland exhibitions and always attracts good entries and a large attendance. The fortyninth . show, which was held to-day, followed the general rule in both respects—the perfect summer weather drew a large Crowd, and the entries exceeded last year’s record total, there being about 000 this V year, against 850'last year. For , the past 20 years the society has been without a showground of its own, but at last that handicap baa been removed: The -new grounds were officially , opened this morning. : They , are fully equipped in every way and are ideally • Situated. Eveyy facility is provided for the accommodation of stock, side; shows, and the public, arid all the necessary buildings are - complete. < It is encouraging; to the society to have received such excellent entries and a record gate on Its srsb driy' in its new quarters. Had the , heavy '’rain Which drenched , the showgrounds ■ from 4 o’clock onwards fallen earlier there would have been a different story to tell. As it was, »fepr of the public—rinost of whom bad come out dressed for'the hot weather that prevailed in the morning—stayed to watch the varied programme of interesting competitions. No doubt disorganisation resulted from the- move to new quartets, but the society. cannot be congratulated upon the manner i.;. .in which the programme was carried , through. The employment of small boys as.stewards and recorders ;of • results , proved a dismal failure from the pressman’s point of view, and not a few of ' the tabulated results went’ astray ns a : . rieault of the unsatisfactory way in which ! the 'marshals discharged ;,their duties.- A few results were net available even after » ; the' crowd had left the grounds in the ’ evening, ■ - \ THE STOCK. •A: feature of the 'catalogue was tire ' almost entire absence of solo exhibition claspfes. : There, was some degree of .com-'- ' -petition in dveyy'section. " The sheep dis•■■■'play was not a large one, 'but the Border ii Leicester and Romney Alafsh breeds were well represented, and/ in the former .sec- - tion'good showings were made l by Messrs J, A. Edwards (Otikerama), P. .Oampi bell; (iWyndhairi), and H, H, Dunlop -(Edendale). The chief exhibitors In the , latter section were '.Meters W. G. Ladbrook (Gore), W. and J. Johnston (Ashley,.,Downs), and ,Mr Heriry . Stirling ■ : etocfc’jWen brought opt, and true to type. South downs,- Shropshire®, knd crossbreds ; were small sections, .but: there was a riot-, ■ able uniformity of quality in Fat sheep and fat lambs made' a very ‘interesting display. - The reputatiop that Southland has built up for prime *quality, ■ wft® In no way endangered by to-day’s •bowing. , ■ , , ■ The three'.dairy breeds ■of cattle were all well represented, the honours in each case ’being> well distributed. Among recognised breeders of the district, Messrs: i W.-y, Dickie arid. Sons.; (Mdtaura), R, S/Dickie: (Tuturau),' arid R. K. M’Dori* aid (Edendale), were most promirient exhibitors of 'Friesiaris, and the - most Successful Ayrshire - exhibitors, were Messrs A. M. Weir (Menzies -Perry), ‘ T.' Q - .■ Dobbie (Wyndham), and Frank Hall’ (Ederidfile); Ift'lHe Jersey section, ■ . MessfS Robert Gibb (Menzies Ferry)/ R. CnaeKe- : (Meimles vFerry); and T D; -Catrie- - ron (Mataura) 'divided the honours. The Red Poll - and crossbred- classes, neither of Which- was outstanding, were the only other sections that, attracted entries. . The? display- of heavy horses was a good • one, butjt was.far outdone by the eplon- .;, did array of' light horses of all ■ descriptiops, and the ponies Were particularly good. ; -The judge (Air Alexander Campbell, Milton) said -he.Jiad never before seen such an excellent showing of this class of stock. The hacks were a’ very, mixed lot, but there were some splendid animals among them.-v The champion en- • tire was Mr Arch, Wilson’s (Heriley) im- . -ported stallion Morcngo, which is at pre-: sent touring ..the district: Mr J. ArDonaid’s :Bruce of Woodlands took the reserve championship; The female cham- . pions both came from Air D. Caldwell’s Stables. ... , ■ HOME INDUSTRIES. Home industries supplied, a great many ■ entries and provided an unfailing source '• of attraction for, the women folk and for those whose inclinations lie in that diree- ■ trim, i, . . -,9IDe shows. There was 4 wide variety of side shows. ■ Following is the prize list:— SHEEP. BORDER LEICESTERS. Judge: Mr James Grant (Otautau).
