MANCHESTER UNITY.

The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Caversham Lodge drew a good number of members. N.G. Bro. Jackson was in the chair. A number of visiting brethren from the Centenary, Albion, and Hand and Heart lodges were welcomed- A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Bro. A. Duncan was carried in silence. The sum of one guinea was given to the funds of the St. John Ambulance Association. The nominations for various offices were reopened and an invitation was extendedto the District Executive to be present at the installation ceremonies next lodge night. The balance sheet in connection with the recent anniversary functions disclosed a satisfactory credit balance. P-P.G.M. Lawny outlined the work of the Campaign Committee in connection with the approaching eightieth anniversary of the Order in Otago. v The following were elected to the Juvenile Management Committee: —P-.G.’s Bro. Hill (president), Bro. Wallace (vice-president), .Bro. Jackson (treasurer). Bro. Hill spoke on the progress of the juvenile branch and appealed for the support of all adult members, stressing the value of. the juvenile movement to the Order. It was decided to entertain the boys at their next meeting, the sum of £2 being voted towards this and the prize fund, r- Before closing the lodge the G.M., Bro. Emmerson was the recipient of congratulations and good wishes from his fellow members in view of his approaching marriage. During the meeting two candidates were initiated, making a total of 45 new members for 1 the year.

The usual meeting of Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge was largely, attended, the N.Q., Bro. C. MTntyre was in |tho chair. An official visit was received from the Loyal Tapanui Lodge, over 20 members motoring from Tapanui, In proposing the toast of the visitors, V.G. Bro, Dimmock stated that it gave them great pleasure to see so many- of the Tapanui brethren present. He also extended a hearty welcome to P.G. Bro. Peter Thomson (Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, Dunedin). N.G. Bro. J. F. Bobertson (Tapanui) and Bro. Thomson returned thanks. The "visitors were 1 then entertained at. the pictures. On returning to the lodgeroom supper was served, after which a good rendering of the initiation charge was given by the Tapanui brethren. The (Bro. R. Moore) then took the chair, and an enjoyable evening was spent in song and story, A hearty vote of thanks wns accorded the brethren of the Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge and the 'chairman. A pleasant evening concluded with the sing'ing of " Auld Lang Syne ” and the National Anthem. *

The N.G., Bro. R. Campbell, presided over the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Mosgiel Lodge, at which there was a good attendance of members. Nominations were received for the various offices, and one proposition for membership submitted. Several members of standing announced their intention of attending the anniversary of the Otago district at the Hand and Heart Lcdgfe m Tuesday next, Before closing the meeting several of the senior members spoke in high terms of P.G. Bro. Gallick, who is leaving the district to take up his residence at Christchurch. Bro. Callick was one of the first members of the Mosgiel Lodge, of which he has been an active worker for 49 years. He also took a teen interest in the juvenile movement. The visitors’ toast was 'responded to by members of Loyal Dunedin Lodge. The monthly meeting of the Loyal Dunback Lodge was presided'over by P.G. Bro. Purvis, there being, a fair attendance of members. The usual correspondence and routine business were dealt with, after which nominations were opened for the various chairs, the ; election and installation to be held next lodge night. . P.G. Bro. Murray gave ■ notice of a motion which will be keenly debated at the next meeting, the subject having an important bearing on the social activities of the lodge. ■ The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Centenary Lodge was held on Tuesday evening, the N.G., Bro. Hartstongo, presiding over a good muster of members and visi-tors-representing Loyal Tapanui and Dunedin Lodges. Two new members were initiated and one proposition fot member-: ship received. It was decided to hold the election and installation of officers next lodge night. At the conclusion of, the ordinary business an adjournment was made to entertain the ladies, of whom there was a large number. A progressive euchre tournament was staged, the N.G. presenting prizes to the winners as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Bayley X, Mrs Cumbcrbeach 2; gentlemen: Bro. Cumberbeach 1, Bro. Allan 2. On Tuesday evening a summoned meeting of the Loyal Roxburgh Lodge was held, N.G. Bro. Allen presiding. The special business was the nomination of officers, and several were nominated for the various positions. It was decided to hold the election and installation on December 18,- when there will also be a presentation of P.G.’s certificates. . The senior past officers are also entertaining the members, and every effort is being made to make this, the last meeting for the year, a big one. One new member was initiated, and a final rally was urged, to secure the lodge’s complement for the 1000 member campaign.

On Thursday-evening the Loyal Albion Lodge met in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Stuart street, N.G. Bro. W. Longworth’presiding over an excellent attendance of members and visiting brethren. Correspondence included the membership campaign return to October 31, the total standing at 649 new members for the district. One maternity claim was passed for payment. It was decided to‘ forward a letter to an old and esteemed member of Loyal Dnnedin Lodge, P.G. Bro. G, T, Scoones, expressing sympathy with him in his illness. A number of brethren of the Loyal Caversham Lodge were welcomed, and an interesting evening was spent in debate, the subject being, “ That the time ,1s now ripe for the abolition of half-yearly district meetings." Three Caversham members, Bros. Lawry, Souness, and Isaacs, spoke on the affirmative, the negative side being in the hands of three Albion brethren, Bros. Sullivan, E. Longworth, and Alpine. , Bro. C. B. Barrowclough (Loyal Dunedin), who acted as judge, gave a fine summing up, and congratulated the speakers on their good showing at what was an impromptu debate. He explained the system of alloting marks, and tendered some valuable suggestions and advice for the conduct of future debates. He awarded the decision to the Caversham speakers, who very ably stated their side of the question. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Barrowclough for hia srvices. Supper was then handed round. The resignation of the permanent secretary, Bro. Sullivan, on account of his transfer from Dunedin, was announced, P.P.G.M. Bro, Stabb offering to fill the position temporarily till the end of March, when the quarterly summoned meeting will be asked to appoint a successor. Brethren from Loyal Centenary, Princess Mary, Dunedin, and Hand and Heart responded to the toast of visiting members. During the meeting one proposition for membership was received.
