By Sentinel. , The field for the Tihwald Handicap at Ashburton to-day is a most disappointing one. Sir Roy's running: at the Cup meeting will • probably find him being made favourite.; ' 1 , Front Rank has not been racing well and even with her light weight she is not likely to he as wejl supported as the 1 other two runners in the Tihwald Handicap.Star Stranger II is smart ovdV five furlongs and so will-be suited'by the distance of the Laghxhor Plate at Ashburton today.'- ■, . -

Crown Area has a big burden in the Wakanui Handicap at Ashburton to-day, but (hat fact will not prevent him from being made. a sound favourite if there is any indication that his chances are fancied by-the stable., , - ■ Royal Tractor finds six furlongs just far enough for him and he must have the conditions in his favour. Ha is’.sure ,to be one of the leaders for most’’of the way in the Wakanui-Handicap, to-day. Ceremony, ■ the winner of‘the Oroua .Stakes at the Feilding meeting/ has, as a result of that win, entered into discus-

sions. on the Foal Stakes, which will be

run on Boxing Day at Auckland. He may ... "'Snot ‘beat Honour, but the Riccarton colt ;•' will not have siith an easy win aishe did last month. • , . Concentrate and Oratrix are' working well the right-handed way at Treptham. Concentrate is improving steadily and is . regarded as a possibility for -the Derby ' in Auckland. I Last season The Raider gave promise of being a sprinter above the: ordinary in ; his class, and at the recent Feilding meeting he bad a comfortable win. The Raider is a five-year-old gelding, by Warplane from Hupana, who is a half-sister, by Advance, toTamatetc and Tukia. He should be a useful horse at the holiday ' meetings, ' ; ■ _ Rowley looked very,,big when he was

produced; at Feilding, but ran a surpris- . ingly good: race considering his condition. 'The outing should‘bring him,'on for the - the holiday meetings. . Amongst recent winners in Australia

• was Southern Cross (late Covent Garden ),V who captured the Victoria Park Gold Cup of. £IOOO on November 24, cut- ' ting put the seven furlongs in race record time. Southern -Cross is an older brother to Qoblin Market. One of the smartest sprinters at present jat Riccarton is the two-year-old filly ■ .Arrow Shield,; by: Arrowsmith, from the All Red-Rose. Shield mare Red Shield.

The youngster is on the small side, but • in recent tasks'she has shown an ability, to gallop, and may eventually be sent to Sydney to enter*, the pony ; ranks. Red'' Shield was bred" by her. owner, Mr N. Rutherford, and Is one of J. B. Pearr son’s team, f Rascal was responsible for an impies- ; sive, gallop at Riccarton on Thursday, and it is evident the cx-North Islander is getting back to something like his old form. He will be raced at Ashburton to-day, but his chances there would bo more far- -: cured if the sting were out of the ground, as he is not seen to advantage on hard ■tracks..'' - First Sight has ,beeh suffering ' from lameness ■ behind during the past week, and although no serious complications are .anticipated, the ailment may interfere with.his preparation for the Auckland Cup, and so cause'another change in his programme for the Christmas meetings. - The : three-year-old filly Sea Raid, in Miss L. Doyle's stable, who has been responsible for two recent smart gallops over four furlongs,, following on' a promis-ing-effort in the Trial Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting last month, ■ will , be produced in the Lagmhot Plate at Ashburton to-day,* There is not much of her, but she possesses a marked turn of speed, without as yet showing the necessary stamina to see out anything but a • shott journey. Sea Raid by Night Raid from the Martian mare Sea Maid, and " nra l? )re(i her Cwn « r . Mr A. F. Roberts, of Timaru. - Star Raid, in the same stable and ownership, has also been doing imwork of late, and if he could repeat this in his races, he would earn a winning bracket. He has, up fo, date, faded to; show any promise with the colours up, but will probably improve with more racing experience. He is also engaged at Ashburton. Court Jester has shown marked improvement in his recent track work, and J. M Combe should soon win a race with xn6 Auatrahan-bred gelding, TROTTING. / , FIXTURES. .■ December B.—Cheviot T.C. January 4, s.—Greymouth T.C. January 19.—Wellington T.C. January 24, 26.—Forbury Park T.C. ' By Sentinel. Star Lady, who is on the front of the Melrose Handicap at Ashburton to-day, is a promising young pacer from C. S. Donald's stable. Nelson de Oro is improving all the time, and taking a line through his running at the Forbury Park meeting he looks nicely , placed in the Waikaura Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting. King Pointer is handicapped a second better in the Parnell" Handicap at the Auckland -Club’s meeting than he was in ■ the President’s ■ Handicap at Forbury Park. Provided he shows his Oamaru form again the Young Star Pointer gelding will be hard to beat. The three-year-old trotter Great Way did a particularly nice work-out at Epsom recently, stepping over a mile and a-half in smart time for a youngster. Great Way, who is engaged in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, gives every indication of developing into a high-class trotter. J. Deyell, for whom both Nelson Ata and Proud Ata won races at the Forbury Park meeting, took back, the trotter Nelson’s Prince, who was previously owned . in the North Otago district. Cytheria has shaken off the effects of her fall, and is ready to show her best. She is smart under saddle and should show up prominently in. the Landon Handicap at Oamaru, Gold Sovereign has trotted some solid races, and on his best form he looks well

placed on the limit of a 4.46 class at to-day. When he ran second to Direct Action on the opening day at Otalfiihu he was .standing the winner- up yards, and then ran him to helf a length, doing the mile and a-half in 3min 30 4-ssec.

Although he has several times been in a' place over a two-mile journey. Nelson Tasker has always tired over the last Quarter, which has prevented him from getting the big end of the stake. He is on the limit of the Mark Memorial Handicap at Hamilton to-day, and will be driven by F. Gilchrist.

Bonanza, who ha| not struck his true form since being taken from Southland to Auckland, was given a work-out over two miles at Epsom recently, but his showing pot impressive. He is taking a long time to , come right.' CROMWELL JOCKEY CLUB. MARTIS WINS CHIEF EVENT. (From Ooh Special Reporteh.) CROMWELL, December 7.The Cromwell Jockey Club’s meeting opened yesterday in warm but windy weather,, there being, a fair attendance. As a result of recent dry weather the track was hard and dusty, and some fairly good times were registered. ]With the exception of the Upper Clutha Trot the fields were small, a second dividend beipg paid in only one galloping race—the Lowburn Handicap. The surprise of the day waS the good performance.in the principal race of the veteran Martis, which, although lying second last at the home turn, .scored a comfortable four lengths' win. The totalisator handled £2400, compared with £2934 for the first day of last year. Results:—

TAUMARUNUI RACES. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 7. The Taumarunui Racing Club’s meeting will be held to-morrow. There are seven acceptors in the Cup. Arikitoa has accepted for three events at the’meeting, and whether the Cup will be his mission remains to be seen. Reports of his training work indicate that he will run well in whatever event he starts. Of the others, the top-weight Siaosi and Te Koroke will have many friends, particularly if Arikitoa fails to go to the barrier. ‘ CATTLE FLAT HACK RACING. CLUB. PROPERTY PURCHASED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) GORE, December 6. The Cattle Flat Hack Racing /Club, which has its headquarters at Balfour, and. which is. recognised as the most popular non-tolalisator fixture in Otago and Southland, has recently purchased a property, close to Balfour township. The club has recently been registered as an incorporated body, and the property purchased has an area of 148 acres It was one of the sections sold by the New Zealand Agricultural Company when its property in the ~ Waimea Plains was cut up for closer settlement, and was then secured by Mr Dugald M'Phee. The property is all in fescue, and there is a very nice crop of 60 acres to be cut this year, while next year the balance will provide a first cut crop. The club intends to harvest the crop itself, and the return from it should go a long way in reducing the debt on the property. A bazaar was held some three or four years ago at Balfour to raise funds for the purchase of a property, when the sum of £6OO was raised, and this has been increased by accrued interest. The property purchased is within half a mile from Balfour township, and it is intended to make provision for buildings when funds permit. The club is deserving of every consideration from the racing authorities, and should in time receive the benefit of a permit for its annual race meeting. With the exception of one year during the war, for 32 years the club has carried on successfully, and has provided the public of the district and surrounding centres with a pleasant outing and an interesting day's racing. The club has always had to rely on the generosity of different farmers in the district for a paddock to race in, and successful and enjoyable meetings have been held on properties owned by Mr T. Keown and Joseph Cunningham, near the Ardlussa School, and in later properties owned by Mr J. N. Alexander and Mr John Lamb. The races this year will be again held on Mr John Lamb’s property, but the following year it is hoped to have a good ..track laid down on the club's property. 1 The stewards of the club have this year made a donation of a 10-guinea cup to the winner of the Cattle Flat Cup, one mile and a-quarter, and the cup is on view in a shop window at Gore. The sum of £175 will he distributed over seven events, and the Cattle Flat Cup is worth £35, in addition to the 10-guinea cup, with a deduction of £3 and £2 to the second and third horses. No race on the programme is worth less than £22, and two trotting races are provided for.

TOE CAMBRIDGE TROTS. (Special to Daily Times.) ' AUCKLAND, December 7. The large stakes offered by the Cambridge Trotting Club have attracted large fields for its meeting to-morrow. A good class of horse has accepted for the Mark Memorial Handicap, in which the Canterbury entrant, Laplander, on 36 yards, should run well. 'Holmes had unfortunate luck at the Otahuhu meeting, and aa Laplander is a very honest customer, he ■will no doubt be well supported. Daytime, on the limit, and the back-marker, The Abbey, on 72 yards, should also be among those going well at the finish. Raima has Otahuhu form to recommend him in the Hamilton Handicap, while the public will no doubt favour the chances of Mutu and Floraline. . A good field is engaged in the Stewards' Handicap, and backers will have plenty of food for thought. If Pitaroa, on the limit, gets away well he will give the back-markers all they can do to overhaul him. Trustworthy and Bingen King are in great trim, and their chances are fancied in many quarters. •% In the minor events at the meeting the following horses Bhould run well: Colonel Thorpe, Great Way, Paradigm, Rolfe, Audubon, Vanity Boy, .Explosion, Andover, Trustworthy, Medusa, and Enawah. THE AUCKLAND CUP. STAR STRANGER SCRATCHED." (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 7. Star Stranger was scratched at 10.10 a.m. for the Auckland Cup. GREAT NORTHERN DERBY. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 7. An interesting arrival at Ellerslic is the three-year-old Perception, who will contest the Great Northern Derby at the Auckland summer meeting. Perception looks the picture of health. C. Mareden will ride the visitor in his Auckland engagements. The horse stood the journey from Australia very well.
