NOT A GREAT SUCCESS, (From Our Own Correspondent.) • LONDON, November 2. From the reception given •to the firs ; “ all talking ” film to be shown in thi country, it would seem that' the silen . film will continue to hold its. own. Th play was an adaptation of " The Terror/ by Edgar Wallace, and it was shown a ; tlje Picadilly Theatre. The diction of almost all the charao ters was extraordinarily clear, Eaol ■ syllable of each word was rapped out si distinctly that it was audible in the fur thest corner of the auditorium, while thi syncronism of the words and the lip move ments ,of the speakers was, for all prac tical purposes, perfect. After a very shor time, also, the. ear became more or lesi reconciled to the tonality of the mechani cally reproduced voices. To this exten the praises bestowed by its admirers 01 ■ the Vitaphone, by means of which sucl results have been made possible, are full' . justified Critics are not encouraging “ The dia logue,” says The Times, “is either dull' banal or laboriously “facetious; the actipi is continually interrupted by converse tion valueless in itself and painful ‘ t< hear; and if ever, during periods of silence there is any hope that some kind ol dramatic illusion may establish itself, tha hope is dashed, by the sudden insistent upon themselves of shouting giants, who with their rough tongues, which; mak< little attempt to speak English and ar< seemingly incapable of pronouncing evei a Transatlantic 's’ except as an ‘ sb, instantly break down all the conventions that are the life of the screen.” “It is difficult to point presisely to th< weak spot,” says the Daily Telegraph “The action seems at times to drag,' and the impression of terror which it if thought to inspre on the spectators, 01 more correctly, in this instance, on th? auditors, is not invariably produced. Al sight of the dreaded mysterious figure one or other of‘the characters shrieks: and the shriek is reproduced with start ling fidelity. But, whatever the reason, you remain almost unmoved, waiting somewhat languidly to observe what will follow. Taken by itself, in fact, ‘The Terror’ cannot be said to confirm the opinion held in some quarters that the ‘talking’ film will supplant the silent film entirely.” The kinema correspondent of the Daily Express is more severe. “A few more efforts like ‘The Terror,”’ he says, “and the talking film boom will collapse in ridicule, a turn which it threatens to take in America. This Hollywood production of the London mystery-melodrama must come near to being the silliest ever shown."
