WAIKOUAITI NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIKOUAITI, December L.V ' MAORI CONCERT. - : An enjoyable concert in aid of the funds of St. John’s Church was given last night in St. John’s Schoolroom by a party of Maoris from Puketeraki, under the leadership of' Mrs, Te Tau. ' There was a good attendance, and all the items were much appreciated, particularly the dances, which were executed with grace. On behalf of those present, the* Rev. Mr Lulfer thanked the performers for the excellent programme they had put on, and expressed a hope that they would see their way to pay another visit. THE WEATHER; Unsettled weather was experienced on Monday, when there were heavy showers, and yesterday a gale was blowing. There is an abundance of feed everywhere, but the gardens are backward. ’ Over £40,000, made out of the manufacture of legal wigs, was loft by Mr Ernest Ravenscroft, London, who died recently. The business at tne Chancery lane shop of Messrs Ede and Ravenscroft, started in 1720, is now being run by a senior partner, who has emerged from retirement at the age of 83. It is said that the business was nearly ruined cause the wigs would not wear out. One Australian judge had his for 40 years, and his son is still using it. In the old days the wigs were made of human hair, which Was oiled and powdered. Nowadays they are made of horsehair, and do not leave traces of oil and powder on robes. The hair comes from. China, Canada, and Russia, but English hair, when obtainable, is the best. The firm finds that young legal men prefer their wigs not to look too new. So black horses’ hair is sometimes put into the wigs to give them a soiled appearance.
