MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. ■ , A meeting of the, Management Committee of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association was held last night. The prestdenf -(Mr J, Sutherland Boss)' occupied the chair, and there were 10 members present. . NEW ZEALAND-MADE GOODS.

An Auckland remit proposing that retail- shops should be opened ■to enable the public to obtain. New Zealand-made goods was not approved, the opinion being expressed that it was a. question' for individual manufacturers. IMMIGRATION.’

Another Auckland remit waa that the Government be urged to .take ■ steps for tho early resumption of immigration. Mr J. y. Love said this brought to mind the question of unemployment or unemployment insurance. He thought that unemployment should, not, lobm as large as it did at present. Tf a'man could he assured of enough to keep himself and his family Wre purchasing power would not be diminished to -1 any material extent, and.that would help the commerce of the country. They should urge the Government to take steps to prevent a recurrence of unemployment., The president said they could only, touch the. . question as if' affected the manufacturers. Mr Love said it affected the manufacturers in that, the purchasing ;po\ver was decreased by unemployment. Mr J. Stewart said there was a large number of unemployed now;; and why should they bring more people into the country?

! Mr J. Hogg expressed the opinion that they could not.take both goods and immigrants. It was decided that delegates be. given a free hand on-the question.. FEDERATION CONFERENCE.

The president made reference to the annual conference of the New, Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. He ■ stated that apparently one or two of the

northern associations had not quite grasped the. spirit of the federation, which- was that all the associations should receive the remits before the conference was held,. so that , the delegates would know what, was to be discussed. With tho general election pending, it was quite impossible to hold the conference in November, and the only thing to' be done

■was to postpone it until after'the holidays, in order to enable the associations , to consider the remits. The only -remits received so far were four from Auckland. Strictly speaking, the next conference should, be held here, but unless there was a considerable amount of .important business to be brought forward he thought it would be a pity to bring the delegates so far south. He hail suggested the of holding t the conference in Wellington, and, in view of the political ’situation,, .ha thought'■'itshould be held there, so that they .could *get in’ touch with Ministers if necessary. He thought the conference -should he ■ .held Vin ' February.,' ’ - , -i,’ "J >, , ’ v ''

Mr J. Hogg supported; she holding; of the conference -in; February, and, he*went on to suggest remit should be sent to the federation' Urging the Setting up of a tariff board. - This proposal was approved l . - • It was decided ,to. suggest that, the federation conference be held, on February 28. The following delegates were appointed to represent the association Messrs Ross, Stewart, Hogg, and. Reid. TAHUNA PARK -SCHEME, -i.. jngs at Tahuaa Park to meet the requirements of the Otago A; and P. Society and the Manufacturers’ Association was presented. The president. stated that the association’s special committee of 12 had met and-had appointed -himself, and'Messrs Stewart, Hogg, and Hayward; as an executive to discuss preliminaries with- a similar executive from the A. and P. Society. Messrs .Todd and Hayward had been appointed, a Works Committee to obtain‘designs’and. prices from builders for a building to cover approximately one acre and a-half. Messrs Hogg and Black had been appointed tO‘fprmulate a general scheme of finance. However, it was expected that the discussions would be resumed in the immediate future, whefi proposals regarding the raising of capital l would be considered. The president said he was confident that a scheme such as was proposed would bring the town and country closer together, and would be of benefit to the community generally. Those who supported’ the venture would not be likely to lose their money. COASTAL SURVEY.

A communication was received from the Otago Harbour Board asking for the support of the association in its efforts to secure a survey of the coast lirfe from Cape Saunders to Fish Reef, Moeraki. It was decided to support the proposal. The president stated that a survey was. urgently required.
