BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.

SOUTH OTAGO.

(From Otru Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, September 24. SOLE SELECTOR. At the meeting of the South Otago Rugby Football Sub-union on Saturday night the question of having a sole selector to replace the present system of three selectors cropped up when the proposed new rules were being discussed. The majority of the speakers favoured the idea of a single selector for representative matches, the main objection being advanced by Mr E. Moore, of Milton, who argued that it might be found impossible to get one man to undertake the responsibility, and that further, the new rule was quite elastic, as it provided for “ not more than three selectors.” Mr Braithwaite (Balclutha) moved that the rule be altered to provide for only one selector. Mr J. Duff (Owaka) seconded the motion. An amendment by Messrs E. Moore and F. M'Guinness that the rule stand was on a vote carried. “CUT RATES.” The people of Kaitangata are being treated to something in the nature of a motor bus war at present, and one service is carrying passengers to Balclutha for the small sum of one shilling (return WEATHER PORTENTS. That the cold and stormy weather of the past week is gradually giving place to something more pleasant is evidenced by the fact that the whitebait resumed their running in the river yesterday, when one adventurous spirit netted 121 b weight of the tiny fish, and reports several big shoals proceeding up stream. HOSPITAL AFFAIRS. On Friday a deputation from the South Otago Hospital Board, comprising Messrs Clark (chairman), King. Brough Hunter, and the secretary (Mr Roy), visited Milton and interviewed Dr Garfield Stewart on matters connected with the Milton Hospital and the general relations between himself and the Board. The deputation was eminently successful in clearing up knotty points, but there are several points that will be reviewed by the board before finality is reached and a working agreement established. The matter will come before the next meeting of the board.
