GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH AFFAIRS
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In a recent issue of the Daily Times a correspondent commented on the transport facilities between Dunedin and Green Island. I think that they could not be much worse than they are at present. It is quite a common thing for people to stand the full journey when travelling by bus. Why should the City Tramways Department have a monopoly of this traffic when, presumably it cannot cope with it? Did we build a new road for the behoof of the city tramways or was it built to benefit Green Island? There are other buses passing through the borough which, I am sure, would gladly share in the traffic, but, no, they must not poach on the tramways preserve. The railway is no better. Any persons such as corporation employees starting work before 8 a.m. have to walk to town, as the first train in the morning is no good to them. Seeing we have no ratepayers’ association or similar body, we look to the Green Island Council to shake things along. Time was when the. council had a Rip Van Winkle tendency, but now it is a live body, and I feel sure it will do the best it can on behalf of the Green Island residents. Your correspondent says he is in favour of giving private enterprise a chance. No doubt that would be better than the existing state of affairs, but I would favour the borough taking the traffic into its own hands and running either a bus service or rail-less cars.—l am, etc., Another Islander.
