SWIMMING. women’s'marathon. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyrlgnt.) TORONTO. August 29. Ethel Hertle (New York) won the 10~:ile Wrigley Women’s Marathon swim on Lake Ontario. Olive Gatterdam, of Seattle, was second. There were 52 competitors. Ethel Hertle, the winner, who is only 20 years of age, receives 10,000 dollars, and Olive Gatterdam, second, gets 30Q0 dollars. Ethel Dower, of Denver, was third, and receives 1000 dollars. Miss Ederle and Mrs Corson, _ the Channel swimmers, failed to finish in' the money. At Clapton, before 50,000 spectators, in a 15-round fly-weight bout for the championship of the world, Johnny Hill (Scotland), the European champion, outpointed newsboy Brown (America). Teddy Baldock defeated Johnny Brown, the towel being thrown in in the second round. The Boxing Control Board announces that it does not recognise the promoters’ claim for a contest for the British bantam-weight championship. Johnny Curley, in his first contest since his Australian tour, defeated the American, Sammy Shack, who was disqualified in the seventh round for hitting low.
