GENERAL NEWS.

The August meeting of the North-East Valley branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the institute last Thursday evening. Mrs Peart presided over a good attendance of members. Mr Hilliker gave an interesting and instructive address, and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. After the lecture the president read two articles from the “ White Ribbon.” The business part of the meeting consisted chiefly in the election of delegates to the conference to bo held at Musgiel on September 18. Four delegates were chosen with power to vote. The monthly meeting of the Mussolbnreh School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present: Mr D. C. Cameron (in the chair), 11. Hight, D. Kaye, E. S. Wilson, R. Moffat. J, Martin, 11. H. Johnson, G. H. Ellilfe, A. Wilson. Correspondence was received from the Otago and Southland Primary Sports Association. A memorandum was received from the Education Board dealing with the biennial election of school committees; a proposal to reduce the number of members of school committees and the consultation of school committees in the appointment of teachers. A memorandum from the Education Board dealing with the observance of school committees of the regulation bearing on religion was received, and the matter was held over in view of its going before Parliament at. an early The' clerk was instructed to write to tho Otago Motor Club asking that body to erect “ School, Drive Slowly ” sign posts in Bowen street as the settlement of the Tainui district was increasing traffic in that direction The headmaster’s report stated that the average attendance for August was 613, and the average roll 665 The Inspector’s report was enclosed. The inspector’s re ' port concluded as follows: As this is the last inspection of tho school before the headmaster’s retirement on superannuation, we desire to record our appreciation of his long and faithful service in the cause Of education, and his inspiring zeal in inculcating the spirit of patriotism, and in imbuing both teachers and pupils with high ideals of life and character. The matter of the refusal of the Southland Education Board to allow a schools’ representative football team to travel was referred to the delegates to the School Committee’s Association to be brought before that body. The Leith Lodge 1.0.0. F., Albany street, met on Monday night. Quite a number of sick members were reported. Congratulations were conveyed to the Linden Lodge upon its success in the recent ritual competition. The chairman of Leith Lodge was reported as the winner of the competition in connection with the chairman’s work. A medal, donated by Bro. M’Laughlin, was presented to the chairman by the D.D.G.M. Bro. J. MTvor with appropriate remarks. Duriim the evening Bro. Rose gave a very interesting address.
