BLAZE OX RIVER STEAMER,
(Special to Daily Times.) WANGANUI, August 28. > Excitement was caused at Hatrick’a River wharf yesterday afternoon when, shortly after 3 o'clock, an outbreak of fire occurred in the engine room of the steamer Wakapai. The Central Fire Brigade hurried to the scene, where the flames were subdued by the use of a chemical extinguisher. The steamer had just completed her overhaul in readiness for the up-river trip of the Waratah football team to-day, and had, come across the river from the slip. An explosion occurred through the engine back firing, ■and some petrol caught alight. M. Snow, the engineer, in attempting to extinguish the flames, was overcome by the smoke and fumes, and fell backwards into the river. He was quickly rescued, and was found to be little the worse for his experience. He received attention, and was removed to his home. A young man named Kott had an arm burned owing to an accident. The Wakapai was not used for to-day's trip, the Wairuna being brought into commission for the purpose. The Wakapai suffered only minor damage in the engine room.
