The Progress, from Pott Waikato, via ports. Is due 'her© to-day. She is expected to sail this evening on the return trip. The Eatoa is due to leave Lyttelton to-day for Dunedin. She will afterwards sail for Bluff to complete discharge. The Union Company’s steamer Karetu was expected to leave Bluff at midnight last night for Dunedin. She is due here to-day, and will sail to-morrow for Sydney, via ports. The Canterbury Steam Shipping Company s steamer Breeze is due to arrive at Dunedin to-night from Wanganui via ports. She is scheduled to sail to-morrow for Wanganui via Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington. The Storm Is -expected to reach Dunedin tomorrow and will satl nest day for Wanganui via Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and Picton. The Kurow from Wellington, is due at Dunedin to-morrow. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port, Bowen which will complete her Homeward loading at Gisborne, Wanganui and Wellington, will sail finally from the latter port on September 3 for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool and Glasgow. JAPANESE MOTOR VESSELS. The Osaka Shosen Kaisha has ordered three motor vessels each of 5300 tons gross or • 6270 tons d.w. carrying capacity for service between Japan, Calcutta and Australia. They will have a length of 380 feet. Provision Is to be made for the carriage of refrigerated cargo, and the single-screw propelling machinery will give a speed of close upon 14% knots. The decision to build a liner of 1000 feet in length for the White Star Line has given rise to speculations in New York as to the adequacy of the present pier accommodation (states the Shipping World). Mr P. A. S. Franklin, president of the International Mercantile Marine Company, stated last year that piers 1000 feet long are rarely adequate for docking such a vessel as the Majestic, and that in view of the plans for a larger liner he would like to see the piers extended t 9 110,0 feet. The Dock Department has prepared plans for two new 1000 feet piers. With the proposed extension of the pierhead line these could be made 1100 feet long. This length could not be attained otherwise, except by digging inland, the cost of which would be practically prohibitive. Plaiis are also under way for three or four new piers of 1000 feet length in the Canal street area. The present Chelsea piers are 925 feet long, including the 100 feet temporary extensions which the War Department Is anxious to revoke. It is suggested that the completion of the proposed 1000 feet piers would not provide proper accommodation for the super-liners now projected by the other transatlantic steamship lines, British and German, while the Kavigazione Generate Italian* is reported to have plans for three new liners about 950 feet long. BIG SAILER AT SYDNEY.. The Finnish four-masted barque Pommern, 2114 tons, reached Sydney on August 14, after a passage of 106 days from Liverpool. She brought a cargo of 3000 tons of salt. FOUR MONTHS OVERDUE. Grave anxiety is felt for the safety of the auxiliary fourrmasted schooner Fides, which Is now 130 days out from Balboa on the voyage to Adelaide. It Is nearly a year since the vessel, which, is only 430 tons net, left Gothenburg for Adelaide. It took her four months to reach i?ara, where she was delayed through engine trouble until last March. It was stated that when the vessel reached Australia she would enter the Intercolonial trade. PERSONAL. The Kurow, which Is being placed In commission at Auckland after completion of overhaul, is in command of Captain R. Clark. His deck officers are the following:—Chief, Mr H. S. Collier second, Mr W. J. Hill; third, Mr B. B. Steere. ' Mr D. Burgess has been appointed second officer of the Kalapol, relieving Mr J. M. Hood, who Is awaiting orders at Wellington. Messrs R. Duffner, third officer of the Walhemo, and R. Blamplqd, third officer of the Loongana, are exchanging ships at Melbourne to-day. ; Mr F. D. Johnson IS rejoining the Corlnna as chief officer, relieving Mr S. C. Angus, who will transfer to the Kaimai as chief officer. Mr N. J. Sltpen, chief officer of the Maheno, has been granted leave on account of private affairs, and the other officers of the Maheno have been promoted temporarily. Mr D. H. Richards, third officer of the Kamo, has been granted his holiday at Sydney, and his place Is being taken by Mr C. G. Hill. Messrs J. D. Lundie and I. L. Russell, chief and third officers of the Kalranga respectively are transferring to the Kaponga in similar capacities to-day. Mr A. P. Cousin is reverting to the position of second officer of the vessel and Mir Miller is signing off for his holiday. Mr C. H. George, chief officer of the Balls Head, has fractured bis leg and is now in hospital at ■ Greymouth. 'Mr W. E. Jones, chief officer of the Kalmal, has been transferred to the Balls Head temporarily and the Kalmaf Is proceeding with two officers to Wellington. Mr A. Lewis has relieved Mr R. D. Paul as fifth engineer of the Maori for the latter to take his holiday and sit for examinations. C. AND D. MASTERS. The C. and D.
