On the motion of Cr Secular, it was decided that the rate should be the same as last year—ljd in the £. CORRESPONDENCE. Thomas Waide, of Tarras, wrote for permission to cross the road with a water pipe.—The engineer stated ho had asked for the necessary deposit, and the request was granted, subject to the ««ual conditions. . . The Telegraph Department intimated its desire to obtain an exempti- n for motor vehicles which exceeded the provisions of the Act. —The request was granted. The Dunedin City Council wrote regarding the collection of heavy motor fees, and stated that a 5 per cent, fee would b e charged in future.—The councillors considered this reasonable and agreed to the charge. J. L. Stewart White. Cromwell, asked for the council’s support to a petition which sought the Government purchase of the Cromwell Development Company’s interests at Ripponvale.—lt was decided to await the report of the Irrigation Commission. The County Clerks Association requested that the clerk should attend a meeting in Wellington on September 20. Permission was given the engineer and clerk to join the association, and the matter of attending the conference was left in the hands of the chairman and the clerk. , The Main Highways Board reported that a subsidy of £2 to £1 would be paid on the erection of bridges; this, however, would not include cost of plans. The Highways Board Council wrote regarding the Ida Valley-Moa Creek repairs, on which the expenditure was estimated at £IOOO, and stated that the subsidy would be 30s in the £l. The work would be spread over three years, for the first of which £3OO would be spent. —This was left to the chairman and en-gineer-clerk to secure, if possible, a subsidy equal to £2. ' The Commissioner of Crown Lands sought the council’s decision concerning Mr R. MTntosh’s application for portion of the Tiger Hill gravel reserve. —The application was granted, with the proviso that a gravel pit should be given in the some locality. It was decided that the inspector should report on the application made by Mr W. M'Breen for 116 acres of gravel reserve. . The commissioner intimated that -VXr Keddell had given permission for a road through his property as an access for Mr Wallace at Springvale. The council also agreed to the application of Mr J. H. Teasdale for the closing of a road in block VI and \ 11, Lauder survey district. The manager. Bank of New Zealand, wrote agreeing to find £4OOO on loan at 5J per cent, for 361 years, with 1 per cent, sinking fund and 1 per cent, commission. —The matter, was left in the chairman’s hands.

The report of heavy traffic fees showed that in the past six months £225 had been collected. The engineer-clerk stated that he had found difficulty in collecting the mileage fees, and no return had been sent by the Alexandra Borough Council.—The council decided to ask for the return. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer reported that he_had inspected and passed contract No. 792, Eindis Pass, forming and gravelling, 100 chains. A new heavy traffic bridge, with proper approaches, at Deadman’s Creek would cost approximately £4550, whilst a culvert at the former creek would cost £looo.—lt was decided to postpone final consideration until next meeting. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

On the inspector's report being submitted, several questions were asked. Cr Urquhart asked what was being done regarding the new road to the bridge.— The engineer-clerk stated that a grant had been applied for, and the cost would be £6oo.—Cr Urquhart asked for smai' repairs to Gray's road. The inspector stated, in answer to Cr Webb, that Morrissey's road was completed. The excellent state of the roads and the good work of the graders was commented upon. Regarding the speed of motors on the Cromwell-Pembroke road, the engineer-clerk was asked to institute inquiries. Several councillors asked for small repairs in their ridings which would considerably improve conditions for the OTHER REPORTS. The health officer's report was read and received. The county ranger reported impounding stock. Cr Scoular advised that Lauder should receive some attention. A straying iinimal was involved in a nasty road accident that morning. The treasurer reported that the credit balance was £205, with £IOOO rate subsidy due. Accounts amounting to £1287 os 4d were passed for payment.
