LADIES’ GOLF

MRS GATEHOUSE CHAMPION. EASY WIN IN FINAL. (United Press Association.) <Hy Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, August 10. (Received August 10, at 10 p.m.) In the Ladies’ Golf Championship final Mrs Gatehouse beat Miss Macleijl, 9 up and 8 to play, the winner’s stroke round (77) equalling the record established by Misses Kay and Macleod earlier in the tournament.—Australian Press Association. COMMENT ON SEMI-FINAL. PRAISE FOR MISS MACLEOD. SYDNEY, August 10. The Sydney press describes the ladies’ golf championship semi-final between Misses Macleod and Kay (Dunedin) as one of the finest exhibitions of match play ever seen in the ladies’ championship. Greater steadiness on the greens was primaly responsible for Miss Macleod’s victory. Both gave almost faultless displays of driving, securing a wonderful length. There was little between them in this respect, but Miss Macleod was easily the stylist of the pair, swinging the ball away smoothly. Her adversary, on the other hand, was inclined to punch the ball away. Miss Kay played many exquisite pitch und run strokes, but the gem of the day was provided by Miss Macleod, her pitch stroke that won the fifteenth hole being perfect. The match was watched by a record gallery. —Australian Press Association.
