THE ARCADE.

TO THE EDITOR. Slk, —The discussion at the City Council lust Wednesday evening raised another one. A friend of mine turned to me by the fireside and said: “Who are the company any way? ” The names were published in your columns about two mouths ago. I passed them on. “ Why,” said my friend, “two of them could well afford to be public-spirited. They are both retired from active business—reputed to be wealthy. Could they not make a present to our city beautiful ? Where is the Amenities Society? We have had some grand men who have set the example, and many institutions bear their names. Would not the new street —now known as Fleet street by virtue of the painting on the High street side—be splendid if it was renamed after, and as a monument to, the donors? ” It was an excellent suggestion. The company would, I understand, still retain two valuable corner sites, viz., the city side of the Arcade ou the High and Maolaggan streets’ entrances, together with full frontage on the whole length. But away with the mercenary side. It is the public-spiritedncss vision I wished to urge.—l am, etc., R. J. MU.
