PORT CHALMERS GIRL GUIDES

ANNEAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Port Chalmers Company of Girl Guides was held last night. Miss A. Mill, commissioner, was in the chair. The secretary (Miss Gunn) read the report from the combined committee. Four meetings had been held during the year. The first meeting was held to make arrangements about helping with a stall at the St. Kilda Band bazaar. Several ladies volunteered to help at the stall, and a fine collection of articles was sent to the bazaar. The second meeting was called to arrange about holding a garden fete at Mrs Mill’s residence. The fete was a great success, and the companies were grateful to Mrs Mill and the Misses Mill for their kindness in throwing open their grounds, and for the wonderful way they worked to make the fete ~o successful. The sum of £lO was raised and divided between the two companies. The 2nd Company held six meetings during the yeah On August 27 the Brownie Pack held an enjoyable t first birthday party, at which the committee was present and provided afternoon tea. The company was sorry to receive the resignation of the second lieutenant, and Tawny Owl, who had done remarkably good work. Miss Tui Knewstubb, a leader, had been promoted to the position of second lieutenant, but the position of Tawny Owl had not ben filled. On April 24 the committee was invited to see the Guides at work, and a very profitable time was spent in seeing the girls at their various occupations, including drill, games, singing, and reciting round the camp fire. The Mayor and councillors were thanked for a donation and for rooms used for meetings, and also the ministers of the churches, and Messrs John Mill and Co. for assistance. Thanks were due to Miss Mill (commissioner) for her assistance to Miss Thomson for lectures on child nursing; and to all others who had helped during the year. The First Company had produced the juvenile opera, Cinderella in November and it provided good entertainment for two evenings. The camp was held at Waikouaiti from December 26 to January 7, and Mrs (Vard was a very good camp mother. In February the company took part in a big parade for the presentation of the Ferguson Cup in connection with which the Port Chalmers Ist Company took second place. At the Otago girls’ sports an the Caledonian Ground Hilda Haley gained a first place in the secondary schools’ race, and second place in the (5 yards novice race. Other prize winners were N. Anderson and A. Jackson. A combined church parade was held, at the Presbyterian Church on March 29; the Guides joined the military parade >n Anzac Day. The company had been in existence for two years, and had 44 ieen members. The Brownies were fortunate in having Miss Booth as their Brown Owl. Miss Mill, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the good report ; read by the secretaries, captains and Brown Owls, as being very complete and having little to be added. They were pleased that second place for the Ferguson Cup came to Port Chalmers. Miss M. Morgan, captain of the Ist Company, and Miss L. Cable, captain of the >nd Company, with other Gudles, ivere doing excellent work. Miss Cable iiad her company up to a high standard. Due could not speak too highly of the Brown Owls (Miss Cable and Miss Booth) whose packs were advancing rapidly. Miss Mill said she wished to say how much she appreciated the work md time devoted by the captains and Guides to the welfare of the movement luring the year. Without such aid and svork the movement would not have prospered so well, and it was going to uake for better citizenship. Miss Mill hanked all the members of committee uid other friends who had helped dur,ng the year. Mrs Cunningham congratulated the Snides on their fine record for the year. The Mayor (Mr T. Anderson) and Mrs Beath, division commander, also spoke n congratulatory terms, and extended good wishes for continued progress. The following officers were elected:— Ist Company Committee—Mesdames iVard, Cleghorn, Dodds, Howden, Booth, 3’Brien, Gilmore and Edgar; 2nd Company Committee—Mrs Gable, Miss 3unn, Miss Campbell, Mesdames Reeves, .ang, Harland and Knewstubb.
