THE SOUTHERN CROSS. ENGINES TO BE OVERHAULED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, July 3. The present intention of Captain Kingsford Smith and Mr Ulm is to undertake the Tasman flight at the end of this month. An expert named Cecil Miadment is arriving by the Ventura on Thursday, and expects to spend about a week in overhauling and tuning up the engines of the Southern Cross.—Australian Press Association. ADELAIDE-PEETH SERVICE. MAILS AND PASSENGERS. MELBOURNE, July 3. The Minister of Defence has accepted a contract for an aerial mail and passenger service between Adelaide and Perth, which is to begin in April, 1929. The contract is for five years, with a subsidy of £70,000 a year. The aeroplanes will each carry 14 passengers. English mails arriving at Fremantle will thus reach Adelaide by aeroplane the following day. —Australian Press Association. JAPANESE AERIAL FORCES. GREAT MANCEUVEES TO BE HELD. TOKIO, July 2. (Received July 3, at 7.25 p.m.) An Osaka message states that the greatest aerial manoeuvres in the history of Japan will start on Tuesday. Aerial battles and night attacks will be featured and all departments are co-operating in an effort to reproduce actual fighting conditions, in the event of any great Japanese industrial critics being attacked from the air.—Australian Press Association.
