GENERAL NEWS.

The monthly meeting of the North-East Valley branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the institute. Owing to the inclemency of the weather and the amount of sickness in the Valley, there was rgthcr a poor attendance, and a short meeting. Mrs Peart presided. As it was white ribbon day, very interesting papers were read by several members. Miss Gray read a circular from Mrs Perryman in which the usefulness of the “White Ribbon ” was stressed. Mrs Gibson, reading about “ India,” said that the atmosphere of India at present was favourable for prohibition. Mrs Peart read part of the president’s speech at the last meeting of congress, and Mrs Sanders read a paper referring to the necessity of members subscribing to the “ White Ribbon.” Mrs Peart mentioned that Miss M’Corkindale was coming (under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance), and would speak on July 19 in Dunedin at the Octagon Hall, also there would he a rally on the following Sunday afternoon. The election of officers for the district union was discussed. The Caversham School Committee met on Monday night, when the following members were present:—-Messrs Todd (in the chair), Brown, Reid, Clarke. MacLean, Friend, Allen, White, and Ruston. The headmaster’s report showed the school to have a roll number of 744 pupils, with an average attendance of 688. The school saving bank showed the deposits to be £133 and withdrawals £l7. The inspector’s report stated that the school staff was a well-organised body, and everything pertaining to the welfare of the pupils was being carired out in a thorough manner. The committee passed a resolution congratulating Mr Palmer and his staff on the excellent report from the inspector in regard to the work of the school. Miss King tendered her resignation as teacher*for Standard I. Mr G. S. Newton has consented to organise a concert in aid of the ground improvement fund. Mr Brown reported on the meeting of the Boundaries Committee, stating that portion of the Caversham district would go over to the Macandrew Road School district. The Visiting Committee reported on the visit to the school, and several matters mentioned will be attended to. The school football teams continue to be successful, one match being won by 104 points to nil.
