OBITUARY

SIR JOHN THORNYCROFT. NAVAL ARCHITECT. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 28. The deatjj is announced of Sir John Isaac Thornycroft.—Australian Press Association. Sir John Thornycroft was born in Rome in 1843, the son of Thomas and Mary Thornycroft, both English sculptors. He was educated at Glasgow University. In 1880 ho founded shipbuilding works at Chiswick. He introduced improvements in naval architecture and marine engineering, which have promifced the development of high speeds at sea. He was vice-president of the Institute of Naval Architects.
