FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

DRUIDISM. Otago Lodge held its regular meeting on Monday night, when there was a good attendance of members. Before proceeding with the routine business, A.D. Bro. Rankin referred to the bereavements suffered by Bros. Watson and Hoyne through the deaths in their families, and motions of condolence wire proposed and carried in silence. It was announced that the friendly societies’ animal church parade would be held on August 5. Arrangements were finalised for a visit to West I!arbour Lodge to play for the district euchre shield, the match being won by the Otago Lodge by 14 games to 11. One new member was initiated, the ceremony being performed by the now officers in i very able manner. A strong committee was set up to make preliminary arrangements for the jubilee of the lodge. P.G.R Bro. Cameron, of Canterbury, was present at the meeting, and gave an interesting account of Druidism in bis district. After the formal business had been transacted. Bro. J. W. Dove gave an illuminating addi css on friendly societies in i elation to the medical profession. The address wa-, listened to with k en interest, and Bro. Dove received a hearty vote of thanks. Lily of the Valley Lodge hold its mcctin in the Millar Street Hall, North-East Valley, A.D. Bro. R. Doig presiding over a fair attendance of members and visitors. Ivanboe Lodge attended officially and received a hearty welcome. The lodge decided to hold a social and dance on July IS, and a small committee has been appointed to complete arrangements. During the evening one candidate was proposed for initiation. On the completion of business, cards were played and a ligbr supper provided. The regular meeting of Enterprise Lodge No. 2 was held last Wednesday in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Kensington, A.D. Bro. J. H. Peacock presiding over a failattendance of members. During the evening one candidate was initiated as a full benefit member. The business of the evening was quickly dispensed with, and the lodge adjourned for a game of cards Progress Juvenile Lodge held the quarterly meeting on Wednesday night in the Methodist Church hall, Wesley street. South Dunedin, a good attendance of ■members facing A.D. Bro. Maybec. Com plimentary remarks were passed by the superintendent when reporting the result, of the shooting competition, and hoped that the lodge would do as well in the forthcoming efficiency competition, thereby gaining another shield to keep the present one company. The presentation of the shooting shield and the distribution of prizes will be held next lodge night. One now member was initiated, the ceremony, music and decorum being of a high standard. After the usual toasts had been given, the lodge was closed to enable the members to indulge in quoits and shooting practice. MANCHESTER UNITY. , The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Princess Mary Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., attracted a very largo attendance of members and visiting brethren, N.G. Sister Watt being in the chair. The P.G.M.. Bro. Johnston, P.D.G.M. Bro. Johnston, and P.P.G.M. Bro. Clark received a cordial welcome. As this was the halfyearly meeting, the election and installation of officers was held, the following being installed by the district officers, assisted by visiting officers:—N.G., Sister Dunlop; V.G., Sister Muntz; E.S., Sister M‘Kay; G.M., Sister Watts: warden. Sister Kaffills; guard. Sister Bond. The P.G.M. expressed his pleasure at visiting the lodge, this being the first opportunity ho had had since his appointment, and apologised for the remaining members of the executive, who were carrying out the installation ceremonies at the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge. P.D.G.M. Bro. Young also responded congratulating the newly-elected officers and wishing them every succors in the coming term. He stated that the executive purposed visiting Loyal Oamarn for the installation on Thursday evening. Bro. Couper, of the Loyal Oamarn Lodge, who was present, received a warm welcome, and spoke on Manchester Unity matters in North Otago, extending a welcome to visiting members in Oamarn. At the conclusion of the installation, the sisters entertained the visitors at supper. Brethren from Cavershain, Albion, Oamarn, Dunedin Centenary, aud Hand and Heart Lodges acknowledged the toast of visiting brethren. During the meeting two new members were initiated. The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge was well attended. One candidate was initiated. The election of officers for the next half-year resulted:—N.G., Bro. MTntyre; V.G., Bro. Dimmock; elective secretary, Bro. W. Simpson, jun. The nowly-eloetcd officers wore duly installed. The lecture master intimated that he would deliver the degree lectures to those brethren entitled to receive them. It was decided to invite the members of the Star of Tuapeka Lodge to a euchre evening next lodge night. A general discussion ensued on social matters, and it was decided to make the meetings as attractive as possible. Mention was made of the lodge anniversary in September, and it was decided to celebrate this in a matter befitting the occasion. The summoned mooting was then adjourned for a month, when the auditors’ report and balance sheet will be received. There was a very large attendance at the usual meeting of the Loyal Queen of Otago Lodge, visiting members being present from Pride of Kaitangata, Loyal Alexandra, and Dalton Lodges. One new member was initiated with due ceremony. The following officers wore installed for the ensuing term: —N.G.. Sis. Grimshaw; V.G.. Sis. Smith; IDS.. Sis. Wilson; W., Sis. Kennedy; G., Sis. D. Kaye. P.P.G.M. Bro. Wylie acted as installing officer, the P.G.’s of visiting lodges ably assisting. P.G. Sister Clements was installed as permanent secretary. A motion of sympathy was- passed to Sisters Waters and Neil in their recent sad bereavement. It was decided to enter for the efficiency shield competition. After routine business had boon disposed of a very enjoyable dance was held, a large number attending. During the evening P.G. Sis. C. Gilmore, on behalf of the lodge, presented P.P.G.M. Bro. A. 'Wylie with Two cases of silver spoons and cutlery as a token of the high esteem in which he is held by the members. In making the presentation. Sis. Gilmore referred to the excellent work done by Bro. Wylie, and wished him and his wife all prosperity and happiness. Bro. Wylie responded, thanking members for their generous action, but assured them it was unlocked for, as he considered it his duty to do his utmost for the Order. The ladies provided an excellent supper, which was much appreciated. The function was brought to a close at 12.30 with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” The N.G., Bro. Pithie, presided over a large gathering of members at the halfyearly meeting of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, at which many visiting brethren were also present. These included the permanent secretary of the Loyal Oamarn Lodge, P.G. Bro. Couper, who was cordially welcomed. The ordinary meeting was first held, at which throe candidates were initiated into the Order. The summoned meeting was then held, the principal business being the election and installation of officers. The P.G.M., Bro. Johnsliton, and the P.D.G.M., Bro. Young, who were present, announced that they would conduct the installation at the Princess Mary Lodge, n number of visiting brethren accompanying them to the latter lodge. The P.C. secretary, Bro. Hopcraft, and the P. treasurer, Bro. Sligo, then carried out the installation of Hand and Heart officers, assisted by visiting officers. At the half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Dunedin Lodge on Thursday evening there was a good attendance of members, the N.G., Bro. M'Call, being in the chair. Ordinary business was first dealt with, after which the summoned meeting was opened. It was resolved that the salaries of the permanent secretary, treasurer, and auditors be increased, several members making reference to the good work being performed by these officers. It was also resolved that new regalia hr procured for the officers. The election of officers was then proceeded with, the following being installed bv P.P.G.M. Bro. Clarke aud visiting officers:—N.G., Bro. Barrowclongb; N.G., Bro. MTfougall; G.M., Bro. M'Call; E.S., Bro. Haugh; warden, Bro. Robertson; guardian, Bro. Roberts. The retiring auditors were re-elected. The various officers returned thanks for their election. P.P.G.M. Bro. Clark compli minted the lodge on its progress during the past six months, aud expressed the hope that the coming term would see even greater progress. Apologies for absence were received from the P.O.M. and P.D.G.M.. who were attending an installation at fbe Loyal Oamarn Lodge. Various sick pay accounts were passed and the usual routine business dealt with. Three new members were initiated. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing half-year resulted as follows:—President, Bro. E. Baughen; vice-president. Bro. C. Kenny; secretary, Bro. E. Eyall; treasurer, Bro. J. Kerr; warden, Bro. F. Allen; guardian, Bro. J. Fleming; auditors, Bros. J. P. Kelly F. P. Muffin; sick visitors— Bros. C. Kenny, F. Allen and J. Fleming: Judicial Committee—Bros. C. Kenn?, F. I*. Mullin, J. Kerr, L. Marlow. W. P. Nolan, 11. M'Manus, E. P. MTlroy, J. Fleming, aud J. Drumm. The retiring president, Bro. E. P. MTlroy, duly initiated the now officers, who briefly thanked the members for the honours 'thev had received that night. Bro. Baughen reported on the progress of the juvenile branch, and exhorted members to attend and help the juveniles at their monthly meetings.
