In 1850 Chicago had fewer than 30,000 inhabitants. Galena was the second cityin Illinois, and was regarded as a city with a great future. It was believed by many at that time that Cairo, because of its location at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, was to become the great commercial metropolis of the State.
