DRUNK OR SOBER?
A CONFLICT OF EVIDENCE. ROUGH HANDLING BY CONSTABLE ALLEGED. (Per United Press Association.) PAHIATUA, June 20. A ease of unusual interest to Pongaroa was heard at Pahiatua yesterday before Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M., when Michael Francis Dillon was charged with beinf intoxicated while in charge of a car, and with assaulting and resisting the police. In connection with the same incident, Henry Dillon was charged with assaultin. and obstructing the police, William A. Reid with encouraging a person to obstruct the police, and Frederick Wright with obstructing the police. On the night of June 9 Constable John M'lntosh stopped a car in Pongaroa township, driven by Michael Dillon, and endeavoured to arrest him on charge of being drunk when driving the car. The defendant resisted, and Henry Dillon as well as Wright came to his aid, Michael Dillon eventually getting away. Nineteen witnesses were called. The defence stated that Michael Dillon was sober, and the other defendants declared that they interfered only because the constable had Dillon by the throat in a drain, and was choking him. Decision was reserved. The court was packed with onlookers, most of whom came over 40 miles from Pongaroa to hear the proceedings.
