TRADE OF THE DOMINION

IMPORT AND EXPORT RETURNS. FAVOURABLE BALANCE MAINTAINED. (Special to Dailt Times.) WELLINGTON, June 12. The trade returns supnlied by the Customs Department show that there was a considerable falling off in the exports during May. These were valued at £4,738,791, a decrease of £1,824,757, compared with April, 1928, and of £496,348 compared with May, 1927. The imports during May, amounting to £3,424,831, were greater by £727.290 than those for April, but £322,574 less than for May, 1927. The excess of exports over imports last month was £1,313,960, compared with £1,487,734 for May, 1927 The decrease in the value of tbe exports last month was doubtless largely due to the falling off in butter and cheese shipments following on decreased production owing to the prolonged dry spell. The May figures afford the following comparison:— May, 1928. May, 1927.

Excess of exports .. £1,313,960 £1,487,734 Taking the first five months of the year to May 31, the position can be regarded as eminently satisfactory in comparison with a year ago. For- the period the exports reached the extraordinary total of £34,439,049, compared with £26,988,925 for the first five months of 1927, an increase of £7,450,124. The imports for the same period of this year were £17,754,662 —slightly more than half the value of the exports and £807,509 less than the imports for the corresponding period of last year. The excess of exports—£l6,6B4,3B7—for the five months of this year is nearly double that for tKe corresponding period of last year. The figures for the period afford the following comparison:—

Excess of exports £16,684,387 £8,426,756 The detailed figures of the exports for the five months of this year afford the following comparison with those for the 1927 period:— 1928. 1927.
