PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, June 11. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was held to-night, when there were present: Mr W. H. Hopkins (Mayor) and Crs Black, Bain, M'Grogor, Thomas, Gordon, Morrison, Kerse, and Riddle. The foreman of works reported that gravel had been put on Purvis’s and Pound road and on Gilligan, Sandy, Mull, Rosness, Runbrake, Copensha, and Auskray streets, also on Taieri Peak and the boundary road and near the slaughter yard. Ditches and channels had been cleaned out on Start, Rosness, and Runbrake streets. Work is now started on the main highway on Rondslay street. The picture box is now ready, and the stairway has come to hand. The old box will have to be removed to line the ceiling.—The report was received. Mr T. E. Stenhouse, secretary of the local branch of the Workers’ Educational Association, invited the Mayor and councillors to attend any of their meetings.—■ The invitation was received with thanks. It was decided that an electric light be installed near Mr J. W. Sutherland's corner, ns requested by several ratepayers at the last meeting. Mr G. K. Graham applied for permission to put up a sign near his premises, stating “No parking place here.”—-The letter was received. Twenty-one ratepayers applied for a street light to be erected at the corner of Stromness and Runbrake streets. Six other ratepayers applied for a light to be placed at the corner of Tiverton' and Stromness streets. Three other ratepayers applied for a light between M'Elwee’s and Goodwood road.—lt was decided to erect the lights applied for. Mr J. Ironside applied for water to be laid on to his residence.—The application was granted, subject to the usual conditions. The Works Committee was instructed to attend to gravel requested by Messrs M’Elwee and others, with power to act. and also to attend to a similar request by Messrs Fraser and M'LeotL

The secretary of the Brass Band requested the Mayor .and councillors to attend a meeting to arrange a tug-of-war. The communication was received. The Railway Ball Committee was granted permission to put coloured lights in the hall for the annual ball, subject to the usual condition. Mr J. H. Appleby applied for the transfer of Iris billiard room license to his sou Cyril, who is taking over his business from June 11. His son also applied.—The application was granted. A letter was received from the manager of British Films complaining of being badly treated by the council. The Dunedin branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association inquired if there were any work available in the district for returned soldiers. —The clerk was instructed to reply. The Acting-Minister of Internal Aftairs suggested that in place of a new Sir John M'Kenzie cairn being erected, a statue would be better, and requested the council’s opinion.—The matter was left in the hands of a committee to discuss and reply. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce forwarded a circular from Hikurangi Chamber of Commerce relating to licensing hawkers by Act of Parliament. It was decided that the council was in symP Accounts amounting to £236 12s 6d were passed for payment. Cr Morrison offered a hollow in a section owned by him to be filled by ashes, so as to level up the ground.-—The offer was accepted, if it does not interfere with present arrangements. . , In connection with the municipal pictures, to be started next month, Mr W. Goodfellow was appointed doorkeeper, at 5s per night: Mr S. Macdonald pianist, at 10s j»or night; and Miss Whittlcstone ticket seller, at 7s 6d per night.
