RACING NEWS. FIXTIIRES. June 16. —Napier Park K.C. June 20. —Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club. June 22, 23.—Hawke’s Bay J.C. July 7.—Ashburton County R.C. July 11, 12, 14—Wellington E.C. , July 19. —Waimate District Hunt Club. July 21. —South Canterbury Hunt Club. • Aug. 4. —Christchruch Hunt meeting. Aug. 14. 16, 18. —Grand National meeting. Pink Note has rejoined J. Rutlledge’s stable. Although Tuki did not land a win at the Auckland meeting, he captured 400sovs in place money. I. Tilson broke a collarbone when Aberfeldy fell in the Great Northern Hurdles. Charlatan is apparently sound, but will not be trained again for some months to come. Battle Colours is being treated to a spell. Next season he may show up at his full worth. Count Cavour is getting through useful work for next season’s business. Wharnclifi'e is bowling along nicely in good useful work at Riccarton, and is booked to make his next appearance at the Wellington winter meeting. Sunny Loch, who was one of the best welter-weight horses ever seen in New Zealand, has been sent the “ happy hunting grounds,” where all good horses go'when they die. ’ ' Mr G. Fulton has purchased Onflamb, with the hope of making him a crosscountry winner.Tuki cost SOOsovs, and has won 2600sovs in stakes and place money. Sir George Clifford has 21 horses in training at the Chokebore Lodge stables. The president of the Racing Conference has a well-stocked quiver for next season, and it would be pleasing to find a tew of the arrows at least showing William Tell marksmanship. , , _ _ , The death is announced of W alter Buddicomb, who until recently was training a couple of horses at Wingatui. He was a brother of T. Buddicomb, a leading horseman of his day, and one of the best ever seen in a saddle in this country. Walter Buddicomb did not achieve any great fame in the saddle, as in that respect .he was overshadowed by his more successful brother. One of the best winners be rode was Bay Bell when she won for a. Waddell on the Forbury Park racecourse. A Wellington paper reports that several New Zealand horses have been entered at the office of the Wellington Racing Club for spring races in Australia. Epsom Handicap candidates include Cimabue, White Fang, Royal Lineage, Slithra, In the Shade. Prince Humphrey, Ti free, Perception, Crown Area, Bright Glow, and P-aitonu. . , , TCawini. wHo finished second to v*iendowie in the contest for the Winter * Steeplechase at Ellerslie. occupied a similar position to Tuki in the same race last vear. This marked the sixth occasion ‘(savs "The Watcher”) on which Kawini has’ finished in second place in impor- , tant jumping events. _ In 1926 he ran second to Landbird in the Great Northern Hurdle Race, and at the same meeting he filled a like position to Dick in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Later in the same year he ran second to Peter Maxwell in the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase, and 12 months ago he beat all his field with the exception of Beau Cavalier in the Wellington Steeplechase. , , , Sir George Clifford’s horses, almost without exception, are aptly named, and (says “Argus”) he has been as happy as usual in his choice for the present draft of vearlings. The chestnut colt by Winning Hit from Equipment will be known as Semper Paratus. He is a wellgrown and good-looking chestnut, from the dam of Centrepiece, and his admirers are hopeful that he will live ng to his ambitious title, " always ready. Straight Course is excellent for the bay colt by The Ace from Winning Way, dam of Winning Hit, and so is Parthian for the chestnut gelding by Winning Hit from Flitaway. The brown .filly by The Ace from Scrimmage will be known as Discord, while Upheaval, for the chestnut gelding by Winning. Hit from Helter Skelter, dam of Childsplay, and Quick Plunge for the bay filly by The Ace from Brave Deed, are equally happy efforts. ’ TROTTING. June 23.- 27. —Auckland T.C. August 11, 15, 17. —Metropolitan T.C. meeting. . „ Acceptances for all first day events at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting are due on Friday next. ‘ Despite the fact that Event is one of the most disappointing pacers in the country, R. M'Donnell is credited with holding an opinion that the Brent Locanda gelding will win another race. Others holding the same opinion sold out at the first opportunity. First Wrack broke up in the race at Ashburton, and would not settle back to a correct gait. Golden Author, the winner of the Trial Stakes at Ashburton, was got by Author Dillon, from 0.1. C., by Owyhee from D.1.C., by Young Irvington from Flora, by Berlin. Flora was got by the thoroughbred horse Tribune. Silence saves money in light harness racing as well as in other affairs. W. T. Lowe was fined for talking to a spectator when doing a preliminary during the Ashburton meeting. At the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting a driver, in response to a call from one who should know better, received a significant shrug of the shoulders. No fine for signalling! The well-known reinsman J. Bryce will have to equip his sulky with a rudder. He has been on the carpet a couple of times this season for not steering a correct course. Sonoma Child, the winner of Ashburton Stakes, was got by Sonom. Harvester, from Gwenchild, by Petereta from Rosechild, by Rothschild from Rose, by Berlin from a Traducer mare. Here, again, is a thoroughbred taproot helping to supply success to the light harness horse. It is generally expected (says the Auckland Star) that, following the lead set by the New Zealand Metropolitan Club in clipping the. classes attached to the New Zealand Cup and the Dominion Handicap, the Auckland Club will reduce the limit of the Auckland Cup and the Rowe Handicap. Mr G. Cudby, owner of Sonoma Child, enjoys a beginner's luck so far as trotting is concerned, for the Sapling Stakes winner is the first trotter or pacer he has owned. In response to the remarks of the president of the Ashburton Club after the win. Mr Cudby congratulated the club on the standard of the sport and the conduct of the club’s meetings. So long as the Ashburton Club conducted such meetings it was bound to profit, and a race such as the New Zealand Sapling Stakes encouraged owners to take part in the sport. Sonoma Child was the first pacer he had owned,, but he had received enough encouragement to ensure that he would have representatives in the future events. Wrackeen, a beautiful chestnut filly by Wrack, from Pansy, was asked to contest two mile and a-half races at Ashburton, and it would generally be conceded that this was a big task to ask one of such a tender age. In the first event, however (says the Press), she made a bad beginning, and, her chance being hopeless, she was not persevered with. In the Sapling Stakes she again showed lack of racing experience, and lost a lot of ground at the start, and there was more merit in her fourth placing than appears at first glance. Judging by Saturday's display it would not be surprising to find Wrackeen being the Durban Lodge best three-year-old. Pansy, the dam of Wreckeen, is by the Rothschild horse St. S.within from the Vancleve mare Verity, dam of Fancy Girl, Pearlchild 4min 39 2-osec, and Eden Child 2min 24sec. Wrackeen is bred the right way to win races. When Enawah won the Sapling Stakes last season Harvest Child was second. Sonoma Child, who ; s ». brother to Harvest Child, went one better this year and ■non the stake. Sonoma Child is a well developed youngster (says “Argus”), by Sonoraa Harvester from Gwenchild. and was bred by Mr C. E. Lindsay, of Fernside. who has his sire. He sold the young pacer to Mr G. Cudby when he was a yearling, but continued to train him for his new owner. A few weeks ago Sonoma Child's breeder stated that his pacer was better than Harvest Child, and would be

hard to beat in the classic event, and his judgment was justified. Sonoma Child was driven by F. G. Holmes, and the pacer did not suffer by his handling. Holmes is one of the few horsemen who realise the importance of not being in too much of a hurry in the early stages of a race. Grandlight raced just well enough to get beaten in the Sapling Stakes, and this was the third occasion on which the two-year-old has been in second place. He is a very quality looking colt by Matchlight from Our Aggie, and should eventually be successful on the race track. NAPIER PARK RACES. (Pee United Peess Association.) NAPIER, June 12.
