OBITUARY.
MRS MARION JOHNSTON. Mrs Marion Johnston, who would have reached the age of 98. on September 8, passed away at her residence, 457 George street, yesterday. The deceased was a daughter of the late Captain Cargill, the founder and first Superintendent of the Province of Otago, and came to New Zealand with her parents in the ship John Wickliffe, landing in Dunedin on March 23, 1848. Other members of Captain Cargill’s family who arrived at the same time were Mrs W. H. Cntten, Mrs John Hyde Harris, and Messrs John and Spencer Cargill. Mr E. B. Cargill, another son, came to New Zealand some years later. Mrs Johnston was married in 1850, and was left a widow 12 years later, shortly after she and her husband had taken up their residence in Scotland. She returned to New Zealand in 1876, and had resided in Dunedin ever since, except for a brief period some 20 years ago, when she revisited the Old Country. The deceased lady was one of the original members of the congregation of Knox Church, and attended the services there regularly until about two years ago, when failing strength made it ..impossible for her to do so. She was a devoted mother, and her particularly sweet disposition endeared her to all who were’ privileged to know her. The many good works for which she was responsible were carried out in a characteristically unobtrusive manner. Of Mrs Johnston’s six children only three survive her—Mrs S. Saunders, of Wellington, Miss Johnston, who resided with her mother, and Mr A. B. Johnston, of Dunedin. There is a large number of grandchildren and great-grand-children, and also one great-great-grand-son. As Mrs Johnston’s father, Captain Cargill, was born in 1784, it will be seen that in this instance the span covered by two generations was no less than 144 years.
