GENERAL NEWS.

At the last meeting of the North-East Valley School Committee there were present Mr G. Mauson (chairman), Mesdames Peart and Elliot, Messrs Fowler, Paul, Laing, Thomson, Purdies, and Begg. Mr Purdies reported that the band was making satisfactory progress. The matter of lighting the janitor’s residence was considered, and it was resolved to apply to the Education Board regarding the installation of electric light. After discussion, the committee decided to defer for a month the matter of public baths, mentioned in a letter from the North-East Valley Progress League. During the w-inter cocoa is to be supplied to children remaining at school during lunch hour. Various sub-committees were elected; Mr Paul, convener of works; Mr Purches, convener of band; and Mr Thomson, sports. |for the Visiting Committee, Mr Fowler reported that the attendance was good. Footballers require five new jerseys. Two loads of gravel are needed. Locks and window's also needed attention. Messrs Manson, Purches, and Begg were appointed delegates to the School Committees’ Association. The weekly meeting of the Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club was presided over by Mr A. J. Dowling. A good attendance of members assembled to take part in the evening’s entertainment, which consisted of readings from the w'orks of popular authors by the members present. The readings given were ‘as follow: —Mr F. G. Brown, “ Characteristics of A Gentleman” (Cardinal Newman); Mr A. J. Dowling, “ The Devil’s Speech ” (Shaw); Mr A. L. Curry, “Criticisms On Caricatures ” (G. K. Chesterton); Mr Herbert, “ Invective Against Warren Hastings” (Sheridan); Mr J. Ryan, piece from “The Empire Builder” (H. Belloc); Mr G. Corston. " Confessions of Alphonse ” (Locke) Mr R. Thompson, “ Sergeant Buzfuz’s Address to the Jury ” (C. Dickens}; Mr J. N. Smith, “ The Murder Mystery Solved ” (S. Leacock); Mr J. Dwyer, “A Smoker In Venice”; Mr J. Dawson, “The Groom’s Story” (A. Conan Dbyle); Mr M. R. Scannell, “Women” (G. K. Chesterton). One of the largest and most enthusiastic gatherings ever held in the Anderson’s Bay Church took place last Thursday evening, when the members and friends of the congregation assembled as the guests of minister and officebearers. One of the principal objects of the social was to introduce and welcome the many newcomers to the district, and nearly 300 persons gathered in the M’Naughton Hall. The Rev. G. H. Jupp acted as chairman, and formally welcomed the guests. The programme arranged by the choirmaster, Mr J. Clark, was presented, and, judging by the frequent recalls, wms much enjoyed by all. Songs were rendered by Miss Rachel Stubbs, Miss, Bertha Rawlinson and Mr Bert Rawlinson, recitation by Mr Smith, and violin solos by Mr K. Fairbairn. During the evening opportunities were provided for social intercourse. After the programme the guests adjourned to Ross Hall, where a set down supper awaited them. During supper Mr Jupp introduced and welcomed the new appointed members of Committee of Management, on whose behalf Mr Sproat responded. Entertaining speeches by Messrs George Gibson, Bert Rawlinson and J. R. Fairbairn followed.
