DUNEDIN LICENSING COMMITTEE.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Dunedin Licensing Committee was held at the statutory hour yesterday, the committee consisting of Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., in the chair, Messrs D. Larnach, J. S. Douglas, F. W. Knight, V. S. Jacobs, and J. Mitchell. The Chairman said that the committee had been supplied with the police report, which showed that the hotels, with the exception of one or two, were in a good state of repair and condition, but there were minor requirements in most cases. With regard to the conduct of the hotels the report was not satisfactory. The report showed that the conduct of the hotels on the whole showed a desire to conduct the, trade in a satisfactory way, but quite a number of people had been convicted for being found on licensed premises after hours, and that had occurred repeatedly in regard to the same house, and a strict compliance with the law had been suggested, and that the committee would require' to be complied with. M Irwin, who appeared for applicant, said it was suggested that the interior walls were damp. New buildings had been erected adjoining the hotel, and the hotel would be extended by the addition of 17 rooms in the new building. These rooms complained of would then become interior rooms. The new building would have to be finished before these were attended to. The Chairman : You give us your assurance that this will be done. Mr Irwin replied in the affirmative, and the application was granted. METROPOLITAN HOTEL. Mr Irwin said that required repairs were being executed, but had had to be suspended during Show Week. There was an assurance that what was required would be- done. Superintendent Willis mentioned that what was required had been completed. RUGBY HOTEL. It was stated that what work was required was' being carried out, and that as soon as the interior part was completed the exterior would be taken in hand. Superintendent Willis said the renovations were being proceeded with as fast as possible. The Chairman: With that assurance the application will be granted. EUROPEAN HOTEL. The Chairman said that in connection with this application the licensee was not likely to come back to the hotel personally. Then some responsible person should hold the license. The present position should not be allowed to continue longer than possible. A renewal would be granted. EMPIRE HOTEL. The Chairman said that the inspectors were not satisfied with the state of the conveniences of the Empire Hotel. Mr Bolomon, who appeared in support of the renewal, stated that during last year £l5O had been spent in that direction, and it was impossime to widen or lengthen the space any further. The police considered that the place was in better condition than it ever had been previously. The Chairman: There is also the light. Mr Solomon said that if the committee granted-a renewal what the committee desired would be done. The Chairman said the application would be held over for a fortnight. SHAMROCK HOTEL. Mr Lang, who appeared for the applicant, said that all the work required to be done at the Shamrock Hotel had been done, and the license was granted. GRIDIRON HOTEL. Mr Hay, who represented applicant, said he understood that repairs were required at the Gridiron Hotel. The Chairman said that this was an hotel the-committee had decided to inspect. The Sanitary Inspector had urged the requirements, and the case would be adjourned for a fortnight. WATERLOO HOTEL. The Chairman said there was a con siderable amount of repairs that were imperative at the Waterloo Hotel. Mr Irwin, representing the applicant, said he had a letter from the owner, who was unfortunately laid up. detailing the work that was being done. He pointed out that the whole work woum be completed in about 10 days. It was unfortunate that the old tenant was just , aig out. A tender had been let for the painting. Superintendent Willis said there was one objection, and that was that in order to go to the dining room people had to go through the public bar. That was most objectionable. Mr Irwin: That will be cut out. The Chairman said the application would be adjourned for a fortnight; then they would see. The work would then be done. In conclusion the Chairman mentioned that the committee would continue the existing exemptions.
