THE DERBY
A PECULIAR SITUATION. OWNER OP CANDIDATE MISSING. (United Press Association.) (By Electric telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 3. A situation unparalleled in the Dcrbys for 150 years has arisen in connection with Royal Minstrel, whose owner (Captain George Gough) has been missing for many months, and his trainer (Captain Rochfort), when last heard of, had gone big game shooting in Africa. It is doubtful whether they were aware that the colt was running in the Derby, or had won the (' I ren Stakes and was narrowly defeated in the Two Thousand Guineas. Should Royal Minstrel win the Derby, and it bo subsequently discovered that Captain Gough earlier had met his death in the African the colt, under the rules, would automatically be disqualified. The hardest racing men shudder to contemplate th" resulting chaos over the vast sums involved. Captain Gough has never seen his horses run. He casually instructed Captain Rochfort in 1926 to purchase a couple of yearlings and train them.— United Service.
