REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL. A representative match between North Otago and the Southern Maoris was played on the Oamaru Show Grounds yesterday in the presence of fully 4000 people. The weather was fine but dull. The Maoris gave a good exhibition of passing and line kicking, but the home team played superior football, and on the day was undoubtedly the better side. The teams were as follows; North Otago (Maroon) .-Full-back, Mansfield; three-quarters—Wise, Sumpter, M'Kerrow; five-eighths, Dowdall and Hallow; half-back, M'lvor; forwards —A. Campbell, Frame, B. Cameron, Wills, D. Campbell, Sim, Clark, Pringle. _ Maoris (All Black)-Full-back, Hadfield; three-quarters—Williams, Priestly, Gibb; five-eighths, Tairoa and Manning; half-back, Tetau; forwards—Stewart, Anglean, Crossby, Whaanga, Smith, 1. Manning, Ellison, Morete. . North Otago kicked off, and the Maoris at once assumed the aggressive. A forward rush proved abortive through Tairoa kicking too hard, and North Otago was forced. Again the Blacks set up an attack, and Priestly made a good run. His pass, however, was intercepted. Isiorth Otago was pressed severely, and was fortunate in being able to force. Crossby followed up a good kick, and carried play to the Maroon territory: but a good save was effected, and the Maroon forwards transferred play to the other end of the field, where Mansfield made an unsuccessful attempt to kick a goal from a penalty. Hadfield found the line in the opposing twenty-live, and from the line out Pringle was caught offside. Morete had a shot at the goal, but missed. The Black forwards set up a dribbling rush, but just when they looked dangerous Tairoa kicked hard, and a foree down resulted. From the kick off Dowdall put in a good run, but the opposing backs obtained possession, and Gibb made a fine dash, but an infringement eased the position. From a scrum MTvor passed smartly to Hallow, and the latter transferred to M'Kerrow, who made a good run into the Black territory, where Gibb saved. Priestly made a good run, but was grassed when within striking distance of the line. A Black forward rush was held up by Dowdall marking. Williams got possession, and ran down the field, but the Maroons returned with a good open rush. MTvor, who was playing a good game at half-back, secured possession, and after a dodgy run, passed to Wise, who crossed the line, well out. Mansfield failed with the kick —North Otago 3, Maoris nil. On the resumption of play Hollow made a fine run, and transferred to Sim, but Morete intercepted and the venue was returned to the centre of the field, where a penalty was awarded the Maoris. Stewart found the line well down, and a Black rush was stopped by Sumpter, who kicked well to the line. From a scrum MTvor again got possession, and after evading several of the opposing backs transferred to Hollows, who ran behind. Mansfield was again unsuccessful with the kick —North Otago 6, Maoris nil. Play remained for some time in the centre of the field, when the Maroon forwards dribbled through; but Hadfield relieved the pressure with a good line kick. The Maoris made a fine forward rush, and from a nippy pass Williams fell over the line at the corner. Morete did not register the major points—North Otago 6 points, Maoris 3 points. The Blacks set up another rush, and when the whistle went for half time play was in North Otago territory. At the beginning of the second spell the Maoris made a determined rush, but D. Campbell gained possession and broke away. Priestly returned with a tricky run. A penalty was awarded the Blacks for offside play on the part of Campbell; but Stewart’s kick failed.. The home forwards made an open rush down the field, but a Maori back saved with a mark. Play hovered round the centre, and MTvor, getting possession from a scrum, passed to Sumpter, who found the line well down the field. Morete broke away, and the Maoris’ backs became dangerous; but Gibb spoilt the movement by kicking to hard. MTvor again secured the leather and passed to Wise, who ran well down the field; but was thrown out when within an ace of scoring. The Maoris replied with a sweeping forward movement, but Whaanga was caught offside and play was returned to the centre. Hollow kicked across the field to Dowdall, who transferred to M'Kerrow. The latter, after a short run, passed to Sumpter, who ran down the line and got over at the corner. Mansfield was again unsuccessful with the kick —North Otago 9, Maoris 3. Sumpter kicked out to the centre, but from the throw in the Maoris secured possession, and Williams made a useful run to the twenty-five. The Maroons were pinned down for some time, and Gibb was prominent in initating passing movements for the_ Blacks. Eventually Morete gained possession and scrambled over. He took the kick himself but failed to convert. North Otago 9, Maoris 6. The Maoris now livened up considerably and indulged in several fine passing bouts, in which Manning, Priestly, and Gibb were prominent. North Otago was kept busy defending its line for a period, but eventually Wills broke through. The Blacks again attacked, and a nice passing bout followed, but was held up by Sumpter, who found the line. A North Otago passing rush initiated by Dowdall was intercepted by Stewart, who sent out to Gibb. The latter made another good run, but was grassed in the Maroon twenty-five. The Maroon pack broke away, and Sumpter gathered up smartly, but a forward pass spoiled tfye effort. From a scrum in the centre MTvor broke away and very nearly reached the Blacks’ line. An infringement relieved the pressure. Wise obtained possession and made a good run, and the Maroon forwards vigorously attacked. Morete, Gibb, and Crossby participated in a fine passing movement, and transferred play to the other end of the field. The Maoris became momentarily dangerous, but the Maroon forwards broke through. Sumpter secured and made a brilliant run. He passed to Wills, who was brought down near the line. The Blacks cleared, but North Otago returned to the attack, Morete saving with a mark. Wills made a dash down the line, and the Blacks’ territory was again invaded. Mansfield had an unsuccessful shot at goal, and the Blacks forced. From an exchange of kicks Mansfield found ,the line in Black territory. A series of scrums followed, and Hallow snapped up and made a tricky run, evading the opposing backs and getting behind the posts. Wise had no difficulty in registering a goal. The whistle then went with the score: North Otago .. .. 14 points. Maoris 6 points. Mr C. Mollison was referee. The visitors were suitably entertained in the evening. MINIATURE SHOOTING. The car belonging to Mr John Fraser, of Oamaru, which was removed from his garage in Wansbeck street some time during Saturday night, was found yesterday morning abandoned near Moeraki.
