BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.

(Fkom Oto Own Cokkespondent.) BALCLUTHA, May 25. FIRE AT ROMAHAPA. A house of five or six rooms occupied by Mr Clements, a retired farmer, at Romahapa, was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Clements lived with Mr and Mrs Arnold Johnson Ross, a married couple, who attended to the work of the house and farm. Only Mrs Ross and her five children were in the house when the fire was discovered. It originated in one of the attic rooms, the house being two storeys. Mrs Ross managed to save some of the furniture and effects, and the children’s clothes. Some of the clothes she threw through a window which she broke. Nothing else was saved, and when Mr Ross returned in the evening the place was a blackened ruin. There was no insurance, and Mr Clements, the owner, will be a considerable loser. He and the Ross family removed to Balclutha, where they are ■'residing temporarily.
