TROLLIUSES AS ADJUNCTS TO TULIPS.
Eveiy autumn one meets with people who, desirous of making their gardens beautiful in spring, plant bulbs of tulips. Some show a preference for the stately Darwins, while others evince an interest in the old cottage soils. Where a clump of bright yellow flowers is desired, which ppear simultaneously with the Darwins, I have found that trolliuses meet the case, and for years now 1 have, at the back of a border where tulips arc planted, a row of T. europaens which always gives a prodigality of lemon yellow flowers. I wonder that lovers of yellow flowers do not grow' more of the trolliuses, which can now be had in a variety of tints of yellow and orange. The plants are quite hardy, will grow in almost any garden, can be divided frequently, and never fail to flower, more especially if a few weeks before the buds make headway, the plants are mulched with old manure, and given abundance of water should the season prove dry. I would remind any interested that the chimps may be shifted in the autumn, and, planted in good ground, will bloom next spring, especially if care is taken to get the clumps up without injury to the roots. Trolliuses associate well with tulips, and. with me. bloom in advance if that useful cottage sort mentioned. —• W. F., in the Garden.
