Mr Dickison suitably responded. Mr S. M. Barclay, who has been headmaster of the Kelso School for the past three years, left on Friday last for Dutitroon, where he has been appointed headmaster. Prior to his departure, tho children met in the school to bid farewell to Mr Barclay, and on behalf of the scholars. Miss Jessie Stuart presented him with a handsome Jacdbean clock, Mrs Barclay being made the recipient of a. silver butter dish and knife. During the afternoon, a musical programme was rendered by the children, and the gathering concluded with the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." It is expected that an early announcement will bo made regarding the appointment of a now Under-Secretary of External Affairs in succession to Mr J. D. Gray, who retired at the end of March. The Prime Minister was asked yesterday (reports our special correspondent in Wellington) whether it was a fact that Mr C. A. Berendsen, Imperial affairs officer in tho Prime Minister's department, was being appointed to succeed Mr Gray. Mr Berendcon, it will be recalled, _ was formerly deputy registrar of industrial unions and chief clerk cf the Labour Department, and was appointed to the Prime Minister's department upon its organisation in 1926. Mr Coate-s replied that he had nothing to report regarding the Under-Secretaryship of External Affairs beyond the fact that a cennin amount of reorganisation was going on in connection with that department. He arrived in Melbourne in 1860, by the ship Detriot, and was in Ballarat and Bendigo in the wild days of the famous gold rush. He came to Dunedin in 1861, and from here participated in the Gabriel's Gully rush. After living in Dunedin for some vears. he joined in still another gold rush —that to the Thamos field Ho then became a member of the Auckland Stock Exchange for 11 years, and wns managing director of several companies; he also managed the Wahu and Black Ang»l Gold Mines. His partner for three years as artock an J sharebroker was Baron James de Ilirsch, of Austria. He made a trip to England and Scotland in 1879. and later joined" tho late Mr C. W. Jackson as a runho'der in tho Wyndham Valley, Southland, and resided there fpr 13 years. Mr M'lntyre was a highly cultured man. gifted with a sDirit of public service, and he- served for many vears as clmirmnn of school committees and local bodies in Otago and Southland. Mr J. D: Mnrtin M'lntyre, of Wellington, is a son of deceased.
