DUNEDIN FRENCH CLUB.
The opening meeting of the Dunedin French Club for the year 1928 was held last evening. There was a large attendance of members. The President (Dr G. E. Thompson), in referring to the prosperous position of the club, poiiited out that the purposes for which a French Club existed were manifold—the fostering of a love for France and for French literature, the study of great french literary works, and of French art and music. But the most important aim was that of affording the necessary opportunities for French conversation, in which facility could only bo acquired by practice. He called upon members to do their utmost to contribute to the success of the club by developing the conversational side of the meetings. He expressed the thanks of the club to M. Saldaigne (vice-president) for his successful production of two French comedies last year; also to Mrs Primmer for her capable services as secretary for several years, and to Mme Saldaigne and Mme Belluguc, who had supervised _ the supper arrangements. M. Saldaigne also spoke on the importance of developing' facility in French conversation. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year;—President, Dr G. E. Thompson; vice-presidents, M. Saldaigne and Miss H. Allan; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. J. Arnold; librarian, Mr W. F Dick; committee —Mme Bclluguc, Mme Saldaigne, Milo Puechogud, Miss Bentham, Mr Dakin, Mrs Primmer (co-opted). The president also announced that an excellent programme had been arranged for the year, consisting of lectures, causcrios, dramatic reading, a debate, a card evening, a musical evening, etc.
