PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last night and was attended by Mr Anderson (Mayor), Crs Bell, Craigie, Willmott, Scollay, Love, Smith, and Lunn. A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Or R. Allan was carried in silence. The Mayor and councillors said that the -deceased ,had . rendered valuable service as. a councillor.

CORRESPONDENCE. • The' Secretary -of the ' Association Football Club thanked the council for the use of the Recreation Ground last season, and wished to have it again this year, as three teams had been entered for the competitions.—lt was resolved to give the use of the ground on the same terras as last year. During March four patients were admitted to the Cottage Hospital, and four Were discharged.—Received. Mr J. ,M. Harland wrote .complaining of the unsatisfactory kind of gravel spread on the footpath in front of his property in Wickliffe terrace. —Cr Lunn said good clean gravel was used, and the path, although unfinished was in as good order as niany other paths in the borough,— Cr Willmott said the writer sholild stand at the by-election.—The letter was receivcd.

Tre Secretary of the Federated Ironmasters’ Association forwarded a copy of a conference resolution to the effect that local bodies should purchase machinery and supplies of local manufacture.—The Mayor said it was a matter of £ s. d. —Cr Bell disagreed, stating that local people should be accorded ■< first consideration; —It was resolved that the letter lie on the table.

. Mr F. R. Dyson, Public Works engineer, stated that during widening operations on the Port Chalmers-Heads road the Harbour Board had insisted on a wall being built round spoil tipped into the harbour. The only ston© available in the vicinity was from a quarry in Port Chalmers. Would the council, give permission bo continue to.use stone from that quarry? —ln order not to put any hindrance in the way of providing , work for the unemployed, the council decided, to give the stone required; ■ 1 . REPORTS, The Works Committee reported as follows:—During, the past fortnight the staff has been engaged on road and footpath maintenance work. Advantage is being taken of the fine weather to, continue with tarring and sanding' operations with tho tar sprayer. Twenty-two loads of broken concrete were spread on’ Beach street adjacent to the goods shod. Two leads of sand were spread on the Wicklifl'e terrace footpath. The water tables on M'Aplino’s track have, been cleaned and lowered. On the Low road at Carey’s Bay, 12 loads of" rock were broken and spread in the bad ruts. .The Public Works Department are still employed on the building of the seawall at Carey’s and Deborah no recommendation to make and leaves this work. With regard to the temporary drain at Mussel Bay, the foreman has asked the committee whether he is to lay tho pipes along the sand or build them up at the lower end; also what method of jointing is desired. Your committee has Bays ad gnood progress is being made* with, the question to the decision of the council. Electric light in reservoir house: -The matter of installing electric light in the waterman’s house at the reservoir has had attention, and the following recommendation is made: —That the light bo installed at a cost of £l2 10s. plus a guarantee of £6 per year for five years All current used would be credited to the guarantee account. During tho period under review mud tanks and channels have had regular attention. — It was'stated that tar . spraying had been handicapped through lack of a sufficient supply of tar. The council decided to empower the town clerk and inspector to keep an adequate supply of tar on hand. — The reort was adopted, The Finance Committee reported thai; the receipts amounted to £ll2 11s and the expenditure for the fortnight. The inman of the committee pointed out that interest, payments on loans had run up the expenditure for the frotnigbt. The interest on overdraft tor the year amounted to £26. —The report was adopted. The Gas and Water Committee reported as follows'The Gas Manager m reporting upon the gasworks stated that everything had worked satisfactorily during the past fortnight, one purifier _ having been cleaned out during the period. Station meter: The matter of a station meter at the gasworks has been engaging the attention of the committee. . The cost o fa new meter would run into between £250 and £3OO, but expert advice has been received to the effect* that the old meter could be repaired and made as good as new at an approximate total cost of £BO. It would bo necessary to ship tho old meter to Wellington, where a new drum would be made and fitted, and the completed meter returned An expert would also be- sent from Wellington to set the meter up at the works and test it for accuracy. Your committee is of opinion that this is an important work and recommend that it be carried out as soon as possible. Water department: During the fortnight three water services have been repaired and one lead service relaid with iron.—Tho Clerk road an offer from a Wellington firm to repair the station meter at a cost of £6O. — Cr Lunn thought they should procure particulars of the Tully process which was said to nroduce 40,003 ft of gas per ton of coal.—'The Mayor read extracts from a treatise on the successful running of a small gasworks, and the report was handed to the committee for the guidance of the works manager.—The report was adopted. Tho City Council was appointed to collect license fees fer heavy motor traffic.^ The Works Commiiteo was authorised to put a pipe drain under Macandrow road to carry away surface water. The Mayor said that in view of the requirements of modern street traffic the matter of shifting the band rotunda would have to be considered.
