CONCERT AT BENEVOLENT.
A programme of excellent merit was submitted to the inmates of the Caversham Benevolent Institution on Saturday evening. The concert opened with a halfhour’s community sing conducted by the organiser (Miss Jimsie C. Fraser), this item proving a pronounced success, the fabourite numbers being “ Down in the Valley,” and “Abide With Me.’’ Then followed a solo, “Hail, Caledonia,” by Mr Charles Paisley; a recitation by Miss Maude Driver, a vocal solo by Miss Cora Buchan, who is the possessor of a promising voice. A clog dance was presented by Miss Essie Johnston, a vocal solo by Mrs F. W. Eason, a xylophone duo by Messrs Ronald and Stewart Maclennan, character sketches by Mr Alf. Hudson, selected solos by Mr Dalmores Macdonald, tenor horn solo by Mr Harold Jackson, vocal solos by Mr Jock Rodgers, and concertina selections by Mr George Paterson, one of the oldest inmates of the institution. This item was very much enjoyed by all. Madam, Newcomb Hall made a great impression by her singing» of “ Come Back to Erin,” as did Mrs Charles Samson in her singing of “ Danny Boy.” Another popular item was given by the Phillips Troupe—Misses Nada and Maureen danced a unique character dance, and they also played and sang, and Maureen rendered a cornet solo, Beneath Thy Window,” and Master Eddie Phillips a violin selection. The remainder of the programme consisted of a double clog Glance by Misses Jill Fox and Essie Johnston; xylophone solo, Mr Ronald Maclennan; vocal solo, Mr Charles Paisley; bagpipe selections by Messrs Crichton and M'Kenzie: vocal solo. Mr Dan Campbell; and an Irish jig by Miss Essie Johnston. During the evening Messrs Paisley, Ronald and Stewart Maclennan, Madam Newcomb Hall, Mrs Charles Samson, Misses Cora Buchan. Maude Driver. Moreen and Nada Phillips, and Master Eddie Phillips rendered items in the hospital wards, and these were much appreciated by the patients. Mr M'Pherson <manager of the institution) thanked Miss Fraser and her band of performers for the splendid evenimr’s entertainment. The accompanists wcr. Misses Muriel Caddie and J. Fraser. Mrs A. C. Brown, and Mr Da'mores Macdonald. Bagpipe music was played by Piper Crichton.
