EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was concluded yesterday; present—Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), I. Horn, M.F., J. Smith, D. T. Fleming, L. Sanderson, J. Mitchell, R. H. Todd, G. Livingstone, J. H. Wilkinson, and P. M’Kiniay. The committee of the Ida Valley School applied for a subsidy towards, the cost of laying concrete paths to the outhouses, the estimated cost being £l4.—The application was granted on the usual conditions. The Architect submitted a proposal for remodelling work at the Roxburgh School in order to provide a teachers’ room and bring the infants into more suitable room, the estimated cost being £lßo.—lt was decided to make application to the de partment for part cost of this work. The Committee of tho Waihemo School applied for the laying on of water to the school, as the tank water was unfit to drink. Tho architect estimated the cost of pipes at £9 4s 2d, and the complete cost of laying on to both tho school and the residence at £22. —Agreed to. The Committee of the Albany Street School wrote thanking the board for the improvements carried out at the school, which have added to the comfort of both staff and children.—Received. The Jubilee Celebrations Committee of the Waropa School wrote inviting the board to the seventieth anniversary celebrations, which began oh Saturday, April 7. —The chairman and Messrs M'Kinlay and Fleming were appointed to represent the board. Tho Head Teacher of the Shag Point School applied for permission to let the school residence.—Granted on the usual terms.
Tho Department wrote advising the board of a grant for the erection of a new school on a site near the Pukerangi railway station.—Received. Tho Committee of the Civic Health Week wrote asking the board to appoint a representative to attend its meetings.—The chairman was appointed as the board’s representative. The Y.M.C.A. wrote aplying for the use of the Taieri Beach School buildings during a camp to be held from April 5 to April 10.—Granted. RESIGNATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. Denham, second assistant, Alexandra D.H. , The transfer of Olive M. Duff to the position of assistant at Lovell’s Flat, from Shag Point, was announced. SCHOOL ATTENDANCES. The report of the attendance officer .Mr J. K. Ryan) stated that during the month he had visited several of the Otago Central schools and had found, with few exceptions that the attendances were very satisfactory. In fact the general attendance over the who’o of Otago had been very good during the quarter, with the exception of Camara. South, which had been very much affected by an epidemic of scarlet fever It had ■ been found necessary to close the school for about a week, fel on reopening the numbers were very much reduced. There seemed, however, to be an improvement lately. , , , The report was adopted.
