SOUTH OTAGO.
FREEZING WORKS BUSY. ■ ■■ (Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTIIA. March 22. To-day three extra butchers were to go on at the South Otago Freezing Company’s works at Fiuegand, making a full killing board of 16 men. Prospects have greatly improved at the works, now that lambs are fattening off better. An important draft from Central Otago is expected this week. KARA POINT WELFARE SOCIETY. At a meeting of the society in Balclutha last night further progress was made in the direction of getting the society duly incorporated. Until this is accomplished the debentures for the hall building scheme cannot be issued. The meeting resolved to take steps to get a petition signed in the district asking for a daily mail service between Balclutba and Kaka Point. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the society at Kaka Point during the Easter holidays. THE WEATHER. Fine weather continues to prevail, to the delight of townspeople and the gloom of farmers, who see their turnip crops suffering from lack of moisture. The soil on the ridges in the vicinity of Balclutha has become hard and parched to an extraordinary degree. Any rain that has fallen of late has been insuufficient to more than dampen the surface.
