THEFT AND FALSE PRETENCES

CHARGES AGAINST LABOURER. A LENGTHY LIST. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, March 19. Pleas of-guilty were entered in the Police Court this morning before Mr W. R. M'Kean, S.M., by Wallace Athol Warrington Gay Smith, aged 27, a labourer, to 11 charges of obtaining goods and money by means of valueless cheques, and to 21 of breaking and entering with theft. Chief Detective Hammond prosecuted. Evidence was given by Detective Hunt. With one exception all offences were committed in the city and suburbs. The accused visited houses in the daytime, and after ascertaining that there was nobody at home entered them and stole jewellery and money. In a number of cases be also stole cheque forms. The jewellery and money taken was of a total value of £504 14s. From one house he took £llß worth of jewellery and money. Goods and money obtained on the false pretences charges amounted in value to £4l 12s. The offences all occurred between June, 1927, and February 22 last. Evidence was taken on 31 charges,. and on these the accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. On the remaining charge l —one of false pretences—he was remanded to appear at Hamilton on Wednesday. The offence occurred at Hamilton. ’
