THE AMERICAN NAVY

BILL PASSED BY THE HOUSE,

NOW GOES TO THE SENATE,

(Frft*» Association— B.' Telegraph— Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 17 The House of Representatives passed the Naval Bill by 287 to 58. The measure now goes to the Senate. The visitors’ gallery was filled with representatives of manv peace societies which are opposing the Bill. These rose and left the chamber when the result was announced. Mr Butler said later; “We have proposed a substantial addition to the fleet. 1 am hopeful that the Senate will concur in our conclusions. We are serving notice on the world that the United States intends to round cut its fleet without any intention of forcing the pace in building and armaments.” It is understood that Mr Butler and his colleagues will resist any iiossiblo effort in the Senate to augment the programme.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
