WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmerston yesterday, and was attended by Crs H. O’Neill (chairman), J. O’Connell, R. L. Smith, G. Clark, J. Chapman, hi. J. M'Cabe, H. S. Sheat, <5. Ross, and W. Ritchie. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Inspector (Mr M‘William) reported as follows: Bushey Riding.—Horse Range road had been widened near Chalmers, and stone would be put on later. About 50yds of maintenance gravel was required between Service’s and M’Gregor’s. The main highway was in fair order, but would soon require further attention. The estimate for next year would be about the same as last year for gravelling and widening of Bushey road. A large portion of the main highway could be kept in good order with a scantier and grader, and many places had a sufficiency of gravel.—The report was approved, the suggestion to be carried out. Goodwood Riding.—The surfaceman would be in the riding to ittend to various works during the incoming week. It would be advisable next year to lower some banks at corners in the same way as at Guthrie’s corner, the view on the road being very bad.—Approved: notice to be given in one instance to cut down trees obstructing the view. Mcadowbank Riding.—As soon as a team was available the work authorised oil Taieri Peak road would be gone on with. The main highway was in fair order, and the grader would be again put on to grade in gravel.' It would be necessary to expend about the same_ ns last year on the Palmerston to Shingly Creek portion of the highway. Several portions were wearing through to the clay, and getting very flat in the centre between certain places.—The report was adopted, the Motor Club to be approached as to erecting the sign “ Dangerous ” at one particular corner. Blue Mountain Riding.—A few loads of maintnance gravel was required for Janet Peak road and Terrace Farm road. About 150 yards was required on the Switchback road. A slip on Craig’s road would be removed as soon as possible.— Adopted, the inspector to obtain gravel and proceed with the works recommended. Uunback’ Riding.—Twenty or 30 yards of maintenance gravel were required for Pile’s road. The Dunback-Macraes road required 30 yards of maintenance gravel, and a few places would do with schist rock ; easily procurable. —Approved, the works referred to authorised to be carried out. Green Valley Riding.—Repairs were requ ired on Lees road and Pringle’s road, and would be done when a team was available. The road leading to Mr O’Connell’s run had been inspected, and he recommended that the water tables be cleaned out and the road reconditioned • for about a mile and a-half. Eight or ten culverts were required, and crossings icpaired. Specifications had been made out and tenders for the work called.— Approved. ) Macraes Riding.—Surfacemen were breaking the remainder of the stone at Tipperary Gully and Sailors’ Cutting for the Dunback-Macraes road. If about another 300 yards were broken near the junction of the road, the worst portion of the road would be completed. Several had offered teams for carting purposes Hartfiold road required some of tho ruts filled in, and he understood that Mr M‘Rae wanted ttie road p»st his place put in order. He suggested that some gravel be put on this road. —The report was approved, and it was decided to call for tenders for breaking 180yds of metal for the .Macraes-Hyde road, and 150yds of gravel for the Switchback road. CORRESPONDENCE. The District Engineer, Dunedin, writing as to the maintenance by local bodies of roads metalled out of Government grants, stating that for tbe sake of uniformity a standard resolution had been framed for use throughout the Dominion. The resolution was as follows: —“ That this council agrees to maintain officially, in future, to the satisfaction of the local representative of tho Public Works Department, the road metalled under these proposals.’’ Hr asked that the resolution be confirmed. —The motion was confirmed. Mr A. Harvie forwarded a cheque for £l2 10s Gd, his contribution towards a bridge over the Nenthoru Creek, and drew attention to the state of the second culvert on top of the hill to the south of | his house. It required to be lifted and deepened by lOin or 12in. It was blocked.—The work to be attended to. Mr A. M‘Rac, Hartfiekl. Hyde, wrote stating that unless his roads were put In repair he absolutely refused to jay his rates coining due in March. Tho roads were in a disgraceful state.—The inspector to attend to the matter. The Secretary of the Otago Motor Club wrote in connection with the erection of a school sign at Dunbaek, and asked for a sketch of the situation of the school. The club wished to supply signs only where they were really needed, and had ' to be careful that the erection of signs , was not overdone.—The information to be supplied. The Conservator of Forests (Mr W. O. Morrison) forwarded a form to be filled in by the council, in order that a complete statement of tree-planting report of the State Forest Service might be prepared.—Received, the form to be filled in. The Controller 'Auditor-general ’
returned the balance sheet certified as correct. —Received. GENERAL. The tender of Mr A. Jack for reforming the Mount Highway road was accepted. Tho accounts passed for payment amounted to £4!H> 7s !)d. The chairman’s honorarium was fixed at 25 guineas per ampim.
