OBITUARY.
MR COLIN MACANDREW. Through the death of Mr Colin Macandrew, who passed'.away at his residence, Macandrew Bay,’ bh Friday night. Otago has suffered tho loss of one who, during his lifetime, took a particularly prominent part in the educational and business life of the province. The late Mr Macandrew was the eldest* son of the late Mr James Macandrew, second superintendent of the Otago province, apd well-known throughout Mew Zealand as a politician. Born in London in 1849, Mr Colin Macandrew came to Port Chalmers with bis parents in 1851 in the ship Titan. He was educated at the North-East Harbour and Otago Boys’ High Schools, and was the first pupil to be enrolled at the latter school. After completing his education he entered the employ. of the Otago and Southland Investment Company. Later, he was an officer of the Bank of Otago rt Milton and in Dunedin, from which service he resigned in 1870 to enter the stamp office under the General Government, where he remained for about four years before setting up in business as a shipbroker and Customs agent. On February, 1879, he was appointed secretary to the School Commissioners for the Otago Provincial District, and the High Schools’ Board, and these positions he held until his retirement. For five years he was a member of the North-East Valley Borough Council, and as a Freemason he was attached to Lodge Celtic; S.C., No. 477, of which he was a past master. In 1879 he was married to Miss Alice Brown, daughter of Mr Henry Brown, of Norfolk, there being two sons, Messrs James and Colin Macandrew. . and' one daughter, Blanche. Of these, Mr James Macandrew, of Dunedin, is the only one now living. Mr Hunter Macandrew, at one time railway district engineer, Dunedin, is a brother of the deceased.
