PASSAGE OF BILL DELAYED. N EMERGES AMENDMENTS. (free* Association—By Teleprapb—CopyrigM.) WASHINGTON, March 17. (Received March 18, at 5.5 p.m.) Under an amendment made in the House of Representatives to the naval programme eight of the fifteen authorised cruisers will be built iu the navy yards. The passage of the Bill was presented by Representative Blanton’s demand for the reading of the engrossed copy of the Bill. Another amendment requests the President to “ encourage ” a conference on the limitation of armaments. A dozen amendmentsuwere offered by Mr M‘Cl in tic, chiefly bating to an Increase of the submarine and aircraft strength, but they wore defeated. Representative French pointed out that the total maintenance cost for the present naval establishment was estimated at 373,000,000d0l for the fiscal year of 1029, and 402,000,000d0l for 1930, with diminishing costs for five years thereafter.
Two women representatives urged the passage of the Bill as necessary to national defence. It is expected that the Bill vyill be passed to-morrow. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
